What the....really? This is getting ridiculous. My manager gives everyone hugs whenever she sees them - does that mean we're part of an old boys club too? What about when I shake hands with other leadership members or give them a pat on the shoulder if I haven't seen them in a while?

Your manager does that at a national press conference while announcing who the coach is?

Razor will be the next England coach

Robertson made it clear it was head coach or nothing and it seems NZR are keeping all the options open for him after RWC2023. If he wants to turn the chance of coaching the AB's down in just over a year's time in favour of England, then you can only wish it goes well for him.

And considering two of our RWC-winning coaches had high-profile and pretty successful careers coaching in the UK, such a move might not be a bad thing.

Jones is going nowhere until after the RWC either. So basically his decision is which one does he want, right?

    WRONG.

Remember the last appointment process which got Foster the job, jobs for the boys right. Why would Robertson think that's changed into the next cycle given it's the same bunch of bumbling fools at the board level. Look at the way they've treated Foster. What happens if Robertson takes charge and has a rough start, will he be subject to the same shit?

I suspect Robertson's position, in his head at least, is that he won't take the AB's job unless there is a wholesale cleanout at the top of the NZRFU.

And I suspect there isn't an NZ rugby fan who begrudges that position.

Only hope NZR have finally twigged to the mess they, and they alone, got AB Rugby into. Expecting and regularly reviewing progress (which I'd want with any new coach, no matter their reputation) is one thing, publicly hanging your coach out to dry is another.

As you've alluded to, there's a risk this whole episode could reverberate for a few more years and make getting the coach you really want a whole lot harder.

I've seen a lot of that at public events and press conferences and it's become quite common. Oddly enough it's mainly between the blokes for some reason. Think it's mainly an affirmation thing.

After the last 2 weeks, I now just want Foster and co. to continue the improvement and build nicely for RWC2023 - if only for our collective sanity's sake.

Yes. And I am not blaming Foster at all, perfectly understandable and thankful reaction on his part. Just saying the optics aren't great. If NZR want to be seen to be impartial and objective reviewers that is, but I don't claim to know their inner workings at all

Seen the last scene in the Coen brothers "Burn After Reading"?
That is how I feel about this thread, the coaching struggles, and NZR's attempt to show us how transparent fair and effective negotiations and reviews get done in the real world..

From afar that was an oustanding performance, Jo-burg is just a cauldron of fire - no bigger test

    • Tactics were on-point 'suddenly' and people knew what they were doing - Schmidt's influence plus Ryan?

    • Whitelock rolled back the years, irreplacable on that form

    • S. Barrett stood up

    • Frizzel stood up

    • Mounga looked like a real game manager, and Havili looked like he knew what to expect

    • Everyone made mistakes incl. Mounga, Havili, Fizzel but they stuck to a plan and still won

Personal views moving to the RWC?

    • Need consistent selection but -

    • Rieko to 11 not Clarke and ALB to 13 when back (Goodhue too slow), BB stays on the bench

    • Jordie Barrett didn't look like Bambi-on-ice these days - made the right plays and has a huge boot

    • Frig**ng stability during the rest of the RC including 6/7/8 - experiment only on the NH tour

    • Schmidt to be in charge of per-game tactics - guessing here on Joe's influence but definitely there were positive changes for this game

    • Lock-in Robertson post RWC or others will have him 😉

As a neutral - the rugby was great because the ref was excellent, and a great game to watch, up there with Ireland 2013 (Owens), SA in Jo-burg 2013 (Owens!) and the RWC final 2015 (Owens!!)

I don't care anymore if you are sarcastic or not. It is bad optics for the NZR who (quite a few people think) need to look impartial and effective. Give him a hug or a (socially distant and appropriate?) handshake for god's sake after the announcement. Just don't let the ranters think it was a matey backroom deal.

The only people who think it bad optics are likely the same back-room conspiracy theorists who secretly want the All Blacks to lose badly as they think it will bring their pet choice closer to the Head Coach role.

They can simply piss off. There's no need to pander to fruitcakes and loons.

I just think it could have been managed better, especially given Robinson called Foster his good friend earlier and the chair gave his "absolute backing and support" to both in the same sentence.
“I want to absolutely emphasise going forward that both Ian as head coach and Mark as chief executive have the board's absolute backing and support.”

I hope I'm wrong, that no one will mention it, but it's potentially the sort of clickbait a Rattue or Reason might make a dig at. The NZR chose their coach. The die is cast until the RWC. Let the chips fall where they may. There's no point going on about the coaching now.
