so how did you guys discuss that back then to get that consensus, send one another letters? 😉 🎣

We used to wait for Terry McLean's new book to come out.

But seriously, in many ways I think there was better analysis in the media at that time than now. Much less, but better quality overall.

Even not being alive then, I'd say without a shadow of a doubt it would have been!

@Victor-Meldrew The arrival of Jones, Zinny, Fitzpatrick and Kirwan was a good time.

Don't want to bang on about my longevity, but the turnaround happened in '77 when, with an totally underpowered pack, we beat the Lions with some of the most intelligent rugby I've seen played.

The 56 Springbok tour and 71 Lions tour were the stories I heard as a young fella listening to dad and his mates. They had so much respect for the 71 Lions. No disrespect to the 2022 Irish side, who created history, but it does feel it was given to them all a bit too easily.

They had so much respect for the 71 Lions.

Even more for Carwyn James who was arguably the greatest coach Rugby has seen. He utterly changed the way the game was played and you can pretty much trace today's attacking game back to him.

Brilliant coach re defined back play in the 1970’s
struggled with life away from the Rugby field.
He couldn’t really talk about it in those times.

    Your son.

    You’ve lost me even more.
If you’re trying to paint me as a Foster white knight then I can only ask that you look back at the numerous critical posts I have made.
What I will also do though is call out people talking bollocks and endlessly repeating themselves. I’m also happy to discuss the reasoning behind some decisions to try and understand them instead of just making knee jerk comments about fatness and stupidity.
Apologies if I have misunderstood this place as having discussion boards.

I'm think I'm one of the better placed ones to firmly reject this apology. This misunderstanding seems rather wilful.

Yep and books and articles were written in a manner that didn't appear to be only to get reaction. Let's face it a pretty good percentage of posters on rugby orus wouldn't read books as there is often more then 2 paragraphs involved and that would stretch some's ability to concetrate, and most were written by people who actually attended games and spoke to playerscoaches/supporters etc.

You really need to stop being so sensitive, I was in no way saying anyone is stupid, merely pointing out the difference in so called journalism. The writers like Terry McLean etc wrote about tours while actually on the tours with ABs or whoever, where as now with internet anyone can post online and seemingly get their opinions etc of whatever is latest internet scource, they don't seem to actually travel with or talk to teams, or indeed even watch games apart from on tv in many cases.. Not a dig at anyone , merely pointing out differences of how info gets passed on.
Sorry I can't be buggered going through to make sure everything is up to your high standards,.
