England to whitewash Australia

Yeah that happened all the time eh. -

Australia should go back to their more standard tactics for the next game. As long as they had the ball in hand, they looked like they could score at pretty much so any opportunity.

I still can't believe they took the 3 points to go to down by 4. This is test rugby, it's about the results. You have awesome field position, an attack which is humming and when down by 7, you take the 3 and then back yourself to go 80 for the try for the win. Obvious basic knowledge states that you go for the try - to at least get you back to evens, then try and push 40 to get the penalty for the win.

I cannot figure out any other argument as to why you'd take the 3 in that situation. If you were 6 or 5 down - yes, I get it. But not 7.

The game in a nutshell is that Australia were masterful with the ball in hand, England were masterful tactically.
-

The advantage to taking the points is that you score them immediately. If they had gone for a try, by the time they scored it it would be fulltime. The Australians took the only chance to win but I think they should have gone for the draw.
-
I've only seen the highlight package. But I thought the England forwards behaviour was pathetic. Whooping when earning penalties, pushing Sio away after you've just cheated and duped the ref into penalising him.

Fuck off. and shut up.

We're here to watch the rugby not watch 8 guys in a cheating contest. But I'm of the powder puff opinion that scrums are for contested restarts, not for tricking, or earning penalties. -

True, but penalty kick from there and then 80 metres back up to win is probably a 10% play.

They way they were going I would have said 50% chance for draw. It made zero sense to me. A draw is not a win, but it's not a loss either.
-

Bit harsh. If 50% of what Eddie Jones says is true about the way they have been treated, you can't blame them for being a bit over the top in their excitement.
-
Yeah. It's that my 2 per hates; using scrums to earn penalties, rubbing it into the oppoistion when they are penalised, combined to create some super hate.

Also keep in mind I'm watching the highlights. So I'm seeing all these scrum penalties and dickish behaviour etc condensed into 20 mins. -

I actually enjoyed that aspect of the game. The English were fired up and passionate. You can see how much they wanted to get one over Aus after the RWC - made for great viewing. No love lost, which is how is should be out on the pitch!

Kaino rubs heads, was doing it to Pocock in last years WC final. I don't like it either but it's happening more and more in test rugby. Aaron Smith yells his lungs off when we get a TO or hold up a maul.

Itoje is young and enthusiastic. He's got a bit to work on but Eddie obviously sees the upside in having that enthusiasm around the squad.

I agree - I like it. Get fired up. It certainly beats English teams of the past half-arsing their effort in June tours and getting spanked.

There is one way to shut them up - beat them up front. -

Fair enough. I admit first time it occurred I also 'liked it'. As I knew the history of the English scrum get spanked by the Aussies in the World Cup, and I thought game on. England are up for this. In that scrum IIRC the poms did demolish the Aussies.

Then as it carried on and included celebrating for simply forcing a collapse. Legal or illegal. Rather than celebrating working the opposition prop into an unfavourable position then demolishing them.

Plus the head pat which was for a crap ref decision imo.

So I'm torn a bit. I actually like the drama of the scrum battle and the elation of s big scrum smashing the opposition, hate the subtle manipulation to force penalties. Basically scrums could be awesome if props weren't such cheats ..,,, -

I don't like the head rubbing after the whistle. If we're not playing, don't fucking touch me unless we're helping each other up off the ground, or shaking hands after the game.

The applause for the referee also shits me, no matter who does it. If you're applauding your team mates, go for it. But the big clap "WOOHOO! THANK YOU SIR!" is fucked.
-
I don't know. If Foley had hammered it straight into touch they would have had maybe 3 and a bit minutes to score a try and get a restart. Reckon that was more likely that going the length of the field with less than 2 to go. -

However, our lineout was also looking quite wonky at that point.

The thing is, England hold the cup, so we have to win 2 of the 3 games in the series to get it back. I don't mind the decision because I think, without a 50m kicker, we were a roughly even chance at the end, given what our backs had shown to that point.

If we get the try, and tie it up, England just kick deep anyway, and we still have to get into their half of the field without giving away a penalty to lose the game again.
-

There's been a fair bit from Eddie regarding the treatment of the England squad whilst in Aus which may be accurate, there have been some issues previously. Usually quite minor and annoying more than anything but then I saw a transcript of the Steve Hollies interview with Jones. I mean, what the actual fuck?

From the Daily Telegraph:-

“And the lads were pumped up, there was a bit of moisture out there and I think you and Glen (Ella) had a good moment, looked lubed up and a fair bit of shrinkage. How did you enjoy that moment with your old mate Glen up in the box?â€

Seriously?
-

The late penalty decision I can quite understand. A quick three points and then 2-3 minutes to try and get the next score. High risk but probably the only way to win the game. Taking the line out option, even if successful meant a draw with no real time left for another play. If it had paid off it would have been hailed as a genius move.

Who'd have thought it, Aussie getting grief for trying to win the game. :o
-

Maybe Hollies was idly thinking about a personal fantasy, and didn't realise he'd actually spoken aloud?

It can happen, past players struggling with boundaries. Like Grey, still apparently thinking he was able to compete for the opposition's ball. I guess we should be grateful he didn't launch a flying elbow at Brown's head (although based on Brown's performances of late, that might not have been the worst outcome. I doubt Eddie will drop Brown in favour of Nowell or Watson, but if not, Brown needs to pull his socks up) -

Thats pretty sad. The ARU has a pretty done some pathetic stuff to promote the game in the past and the press have carried on in much the same vein.

Its a bit weird to see Eddie complaining about it.
