Gotta endorse what others have said. It is hard to change jobs but you are young and you spend a lot of your life at work. It can quickly turn into hell and start negatively effecting other parts of your life if it turns into a "why does that fucking clock move so slow" situation.

It is definitely a candidates market so checking it out makes sense. It also sounds like (depending on your relationship with your immediate Manager) that you need to talk about the culture and your career aspirations - without spilling your guts of course. What's the review process?

If you're good at your job and fit in well you might be surprised how suddenly accommodating everyone becomes

@dogmeat that first bit hits home. I'm often a grumpy bastard at home and that isn't usual for me. That feeling of not doing (or being present) enough in any one part of your life doesn't help.

My manager is a good operator and he's in SLT but has been sidelined a bit. It's hard to gauge how much (if any) is his own doing, but I hear about clashes at that level more than I'd like. It's not lost on my that I'm only hearing his take, so I'm being careful not to just line up behind him just because.

In terms of my area and quite a few contracts my work would be fucked if I left, and that weighs on me as well. I don't want to screw anyone over. I'm going to go have a beer with our CE soon, he was my old manager and some of my dissatisfaction is about how he's moved to group decision making rather than making calls himself. He led the area I'm in before becoming the CE so he knows exactly what I contribute and have built upon.

One other thing I should tap into is workplace support for mental health etc. I think it'd be helpful to talk about that while I also check out career opportunities.

@paekakboyz Sounds like a plan. One thing I would warn against is hanging on because you feel a sense of responsibility e.g. "I don't want to screw anyone over."

I have made a career out of doing the right thing by everyone except myself. It's not a great strategy....

Of course unlike you I'm perennially grumpy so I have that to fall back on.

@Paekakboyz One way of exploring what your options are is to put a decent profile up on Linkedin then sit back and see who comes knocking.
It is definitely a candidates market out there at the moment and there is a shortage of skills/experience.
I was content in my job and fielding at least one enquiry a week from recruiters, most of which backed away with a simple 'not interested at present, thanks' as I wasn't keen to jump from frying pan to fire, even for a bit more. Flexible/remote working arrangements where I am are pretty good and left open a possibility of moving down south and keeping my job.
Then, out of the blue I got an approach for something that offered more job satisfaction and about a 30% increase in pay. One interview later and I am fairly certain I'll have an offer on the table in the next few days.

Test the market. Not much effort required on your part and you might just freshen things up work wise.

If you’re going to speak with anyone senior at the workplace then get HR involved- if you have one.

My missus is going through the same at the moment.

Her immediate boss isn’t up to the task and throws everyone else under the bus whenever he fucks up.

Every one of my missus’ predecessors quit because of him.

    She’s like, fuck that.

    Got HR involved.

Has weekly meeting on company time, and in a short space of time he’s had to wise up.

It’s still work, but it’s better.

In my experience that has a limited lifespan.

Like any bad relationship, everyone promises to get better, but old habits die hard. Things improve then spiral back down, and there is only so far a good team can keep you afloat.

@Paekakboyz I say have an honest chat with someone in your leadership stream that you trust, and see how understanding they are. Sometimes these things go under the radar until the bandaid is ripped off.

Well, a couple of months have gone by and my work situation has improved a bit. Still updating my JD but given they'll get it benchmarked once it's finalised that's working in my favour 🙂

Work-life balance is still pretty out of whack. Had 2 weeks leave lined up for July then one of my team had a family emergency and is heading home to see family. I'll still manage some leave but not what I'd hoped for.

We did get the latest set of plans back from our architect and the reno is looking good. Bank lending is sorted also which is great. So we are pretty excited with having things one step closer to starting. Anyone got a stash of gib? asking for a friend 🙂

@Paekakboyz yep! Halfway through doing bathroom renos ourselves and ordered twice as much as needed.

Took the second bedroom's wardrobe for the bathroom, this fucken house fighting us every inch of the way. Who's ever heard of a metal double sided architrave? Half a day of grinding and 17 cutting discs just to remove the bedroom wall side...

We are doing Renos on the place we recently bought and got lucky with the gib, the owner of the company that did the work for us said he's got two jobs lined up after us but has no gib left to do them, so didn't know what he was going to do. Felt for him, it's not an easy job to begin with, but battling for gib just to make ends meat would be super stressful for him.

I need that at my place. I’m pretty much the shittest handyman I know. I do have builder and electrician mates who sometimes accept payment in beer, I should probably find a plumber to befriend as well.
