@Nepia me too
now to start googling for any new grants for local rugby this might bring, love the chat about the final at the MCG
terrible fucking idea until you realise the other option is also a shit ground for watching rugby.
my boys will be old enough so we will be going on tour i reckon

@mariner4life yeah, not oblivious to the fact your miles from the pitch and its melbourne
world cup final so mean they "fill" it but still wont be as easy as sydney...and althought your a long way from the pitch ive always found even the top deck at the MCG has a great view

the Lions weekend in 2013 was fucking epic in Melbourne, we had an absolute ball.
And it will be filled for sure. Sports tourists at least will go. And there won't be many finals in a stadium that big that will allow so many casuals to attend.
Will try to beat the number of games i went to in 2011

That's an odd tweet. Was anyone else interested in hosting?
Rugby needs the funding injection, but I have a sneaking suspicion the ARU will fuck it all up again by paying overs to attract leaguies...
-
@antipodean Yeah, it suggets there was still a viable second option. Two years ago, Argentina withrew its bid (more about that here). The only other bid was from Russia. Obviously, with Russia starting a war and being banned by most world sports unions, they were never going to get the RWC.
-
I suppose any news is good news and putting a spin on it helps drive the narrative.
Ultimately it will be an awesome event and they need it.

It'll be tough, going in as defending champions....
I'm sure France will enjoy it.

there are loads of saffa's moaning on the socials about being robbed...they didn;t bid though dd they?

Congrats to OZ Rugby. They do know how to put on events here.
I hate watching rugby at the MCG, but imagine getting a 100K at a RWC final, would be spine tingling stuff…. only if the good guys are in it of course 😉

@antipodean I thought I was supposed to be the miserable fluffybunny.

It's a terrible ground to watch rugby but when you consider it fills ~100k and the state of rugby finances in Oz you can see why an extra ~20k in ticket sales appeals

WR's new plan is for countries to host a men's and women's RWC for each world cup cycle. If you are building or upgrading stadia it makes sense to maximise their use and justify the cost.

I think it makes sense to double up on hosting. However, the reality is that any country that will be hosting the men's world cup, will have the stadia to host the women's world. I think doubling up is good because you capitalise on the momentum and interest the tournament brings.

So the format changes to six pools of 4, and a round of 16 before the quarters. That reduces the length of tournament by a week (good thing). WR to take more financial risk with bookings and stuff, so the draw will be closer to kick off, although not confirmed when.
