I reckon they want to follow on the coat-tails of our play hard but fair approach. So even if the on field results aren't there they'll be able to point to culture and team improvements. I think he might actually go well, but for how long...

I would welcome him as the Black Caps coach that is for sure.
No doubt he'd be a great person to have in the set up, he's a natural leader and what he did for the BCs was incredible. Bit early to be making him head coach I'd think, but who knows how he'll go. Personally I think he'd make a great partnership with Kane who would balance out the aggression a bit.

You say this because you do not understand how England cricket works. It goes like this: you pick someone from the county game that has made buckets of runs/taken loads of wickets. Get them into the England set up and coach them an “improved” technique. When they then fail you send them back to the counties to work on their game. The essential part of this is the coaching.

You say this because you do not understand how England cricket works. It goes like this: you pick someone from the county game that has made buckets of runs/taken loads of wickets. Love the sarcasm - utterly appropriate.
I remember a Test commentary where Richard Hadlee was doing analysis. The English commentator mentioned that a England fast bowler (Simon Jones?) had been coached "so as not to bowl as close to the stumps as possible".
Hadlee, who knew a bit about the bowler and fast-bowling in general, was obviously stunned and queried if the the "coach" should be anywhere near any Test team, as it was one of the dumbest things he'd heard.

@Victor-Meldrew I remember an interview with Steve Waugh and they were discussing England selection and he was probably as baffled as Hadlee. It was at the time that Devon Malcolm was in and out of the test side. Waugh was basically saying that although Malcolm was not consistently accurate, that in itself was a weapon "if he didn't know where it was going, we sure as hell didn't" and then saying England kept picking these line and length medium pacers who could put the ball on a dot, "but we always knew where that dot was". Cue 20+ years of complete Aussie dominance.
What is that thing about continually doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome..?

McCullum is very well respected up here, but I'm not sure it's a great fit for a couple of reasons.
- There is nothing wrong with their short form game. They're ODI / T20 teams are in the very upper echelon
- The test team needs a lot of work, but a lot of it is mental fortitude. They went to Australia expecting to lose and subsequently ... got thumped.
They have the cattle to be decent at tests, perhaps not world beating, right now. But they do under perform. Thus, the coach's first task is to get them playing to their ability and getting their ability level results.
Not sure McCullum is the right bloke for that.

@MajorRage he helped change the mindset of the BCs, and built the foundation of a successful culture that still exists in the current team. Could he not do that with England?

Do they though? Their top order has looked as brittle as China lately. From what I’ve seen they have a modern day great batsman, a good all rounder and a couple of bowlers due for the pension any day now. The rest are ordinary.
They should send an SOS to Alastair Cook who is still plundering the runs at county level.

He did that as captain, with a team willing to follow, a coach that bought into it and administrators who aligned. That may line up again here, but it's not a lock, particularly with short form coaches and the politics of the ECB

@nzzp true, but it is demonstrated leadership which changed the culture and as B-Mac would do, its worth a punt in my eyes! Admittedly he has to align a few more stakeholders, but I don't think its as big a stretch of his ability as some are making out. I definitely acknowledge though that if they were in need of someone with more technical skills then I would look elsewhere

Yeah I reckon he'll have a positive impact on the side, but it does show how desperate England have gotten! The main reason this is an OK idea is that it just surely can't get any worse lol

Replacing Rosco and later Timmy and Boult will be tough. And with Kane suspect injury wise we may be set for choppy waters. Having Conway back is great, and hopefully Kylo can dine out in English conditions after a down sophomore year

Actually I would have thought McCullum is exactly the right bloke.
As captain he turned our fortunes around by getting everyone to play at their absolute potential (in combination with the coach as well).
