@winger Can't recall the Hurricanes ever losing when allocated the Bye in their fixture list. This could upset that previously unblemished record.
Im surprised how quickly the NZ pool games have been completed. I find the Aussie game a bit boring now (much better when the brumbies and NSW were strong). Hopefully the gap isn't so large this year. Although the Canes still lost one last year

Any ideas how to fix the Canes?
I feel like we're the Blues of a few years ago. The board is complete shit and seemingly doesn't care about the fortunes of the club as the issues have been obvious for a long time now.
Lee has good years in 2015 & 2016 then oversaw a shambles of a situation with losing players and the Boyd / Plumtree conflict.
Now we've got a coaching group with IMO one of the better groups of young players we've had, but inconsistent and terrible selections meaning they have no chance to prosper.
Does anyone at the Canes give a shit?

I don't actually think it will take too much to fix the Canes apart from a complete wipe out of the backroom. They have the calibre of players to win matches, the problem is the quality players aren't getting enough opportunity.
Guys like Dan Cron have been involved with this franchise for far too long. The whole point of his role is to improve our scrum, yet it never seems to get any better.
Then there's Cory Jane, signed as an assistant coach the year after he finished playing. He may have a smart rugby brain but that doesn't mean it transfers over to coaching, especially only a year after he hung up the boots. He also has a connection with a lot of the players which is never healthy when you have to make tough decisions. (And is probably a factor why tough decisions aren't being made.)
Then there's Holland who was gifted the head coaching role after Plumtree abruptly took an opportunity with the All Blacks. He's proven on so many occasions that he's out of his depth but it seems that no matter what he does he never really faces any ramifications on performance.
I also liked Avan Lee at the beginning, but for a CEO he's been almost radio silent ever since he let Barrett slip away to enemy territory.
The only fix here is to wipe out the riff raff and get in experienced heads to fix this mess before we lose all our talent to other franchises.

Ha! No, there's a long way to drop before reaching those levels
Canes won their last two games against NZ sides. 4/10 vs NZ sides in the last two seasons
The Blues had 1 win against NZ opposition in 28 matches from 2015-2018

The Holland appointment is probably the big one - the Canes have the weakest coaching group.
I think your point about development is the killer - few players are getting better there. How many new All Blacks have come out of the Canes recently? How many have got better?
Would Kirifi or PUJ be the latest? Pretty sad.
-
@canes4life Yea. We're in a "start again" situation with the CEO/Board/Coaches IMO.
I just hope we don't lose PUJ, Rayasi, Flanders etc etc type players in the process.
Unfortunately the franchise seems to be okay with mediocrity now, so it's hard to see anyone willing to step down.
-
@duluth I think we win those games cause we fortunately do have some killer players, none more so than Ardie.
Everything was roses after we beat the Blues, but in reality, the Blues were very tired and lost focus, and PUJ, Iose, Flanders, Sullivan & Ardie type players made the most of it. We shouldn't be in those positions to begin with.

Total spring clean.
Start with Darren Larsen at development level. That's where it already goes wrong (still have to wait and see how the regional volunteers are going to influence development/selection). He's been there for ages and ages.
Loosen the relationship with the Wellington Rugby Union, who owns a large share in the franchise. It's having too much influence on appointments, signings and selections at all levels. All the favouritism has to go (regional and club).
Establish a second base for the academy in Napier (like the Crusaders have done in Nelson).
For every position, it has to be the best person for the role; not the mate that's already in the system or in the region.

@machpants my question is, why wait until now? Why play 4 different players at 12 before getting to Jordie.
I’m a big fan of this move but unfortunately Barrett has Garden-Bachop on the inside and Proctor on the outside so he’s surrounded by crap. Hope they don’t make him look bad.
-
@canes4life definitely will hurt his chances JGB won’t run with the ball and the “love child” will just run straight to the line and not pass…

He only has to run hard at Tupea and he is miles over the advantage line.I reckon he will have a big 80 min.
-
@canes4life yea that's the problem.
We should build some combos, ie Love, PUJ, Sullivan
Or Love, Jordie & PUJ
But next week we'll probably put Savea at 12 knowing how Hollands selects the team.
-
@canes4life spot on there. Maybe Goosen for Rayasi, but else good

@arhs the sad thing is we will never see our best team on the park with this cockroach in charge.
Definitely time to ship the board and Holland out

I'm going tomorrow. Think I might watch from end on to see how the running lines go.
