Glad this thread is still up and going strong.
I listened to a bit of talkback this avo and a former pro wrestler rang up with his take. Basically he thought it was a bit of a gimmick……only no one told Chris Rock. He mentioned how Smith would have screen fighting experience and explained how you can make a slap sound loud but not really hurt the person much if at all. That to me explains how Rock looked a bit surprised but 100% unhurt ie he didn’t ‘sell’ the move…( stagger, fall over, clutch his face etc )

Trying to give the Oscars a bit of notoriety ? Who knows

Yeah, maybe your both right
I just figure he was literally a strong shot for his first Oscar…so it would be a super weird decision to taint that

A black guy playing a black guy in an against all odds true story ?
Absolute shoe in ( says MN5 not even knowing who else was nominated)

Mate, he got applauded for it! You can't tell me that it wasn't somebody else's name in that envelope until he went full Williams on live TV.

I don't know if he was a shoe in, the other nominees were:
Black guy doing the bard.
Foreign guy.
Guy playing gay guy.
Guy playing straight guy who wrote a famous musical about Aids.Maybe Oscars were too woke this year.
(Although the best actress and supporting actor nominees were a pretty white bunch).
He was actually pretty good in the role, but to me it's because the character was fairly unlikeable so he had to act and not just be Will Smith. Although his Oscar night performance suggests that maybe he was acting all the other times and this just him.
