@dan54 We could argue to win till the cows come home. I prefer a bigger number eight that dents the defense with hard running. Ardie seems to wiggle through the defense through hard running.
And his defense is pretty passive. Not great going backward.
Ok I understand you not keen on him, but I think to say he a passive defender is a stretch. You must of been upset with the likes of Read, Zinzan etc etc. Who are all the attacking defensive 8s around?
I would repeat , he was picked in world rugby's dream team for 2021, so he doing something right. -

@dan54 3 to 4cm? Oh, my sides
Ok 5 cms, thats how much shorter Ardie is compared to Kieran Read, 1 or 2 shorter than Zinzan. So who is at 8 in your team, where their height makes up for difference in skills? Genuine question, and I can handle the fact you don'tlike Ardie at 8, just want to know who you got in his place.

Lol Dan you're off your head with these shit Read takes.
-
@mariner4life And don’t forget that Zinzan Brooke, one of the great offensive defenders, couldn’t tackle too!

You obviously don't remember Zinny's nicname as Timtam as he was supposedly soft in the middle. He wasn't in my opinion, but know as a great offensive tackler , give me strength. He was a bloody great No8, but yours is first time I have heard that.

Why, Read was another great 8, but not known as an offensive tackler, but bloody good defender, but not a physical one, we tended to have Kaino doing that job especially in close (where it is normal for a 6 to defend) while Read was great as a support 8,.He was also ABs main lineout target, although only 1.93m Tell me where I so wrong.
And who are the 8s to take his position, and why is he in 2021 dreamteam with all these weaknesses he got?Anyway I got rugby to watch on tv, I will see all these players etc names another day.

@dan54 I went to most Blues and Auckland home games during Brooke's career, and I rewatched a lot of classic Auckland and Blues games over covid. His driving defence was extremely impressive, and he frequently generated turnovers with the force of his hits and his ability to turn players in the tackle.
His defensive abilities were obvious to anyone who actually watched him play. I recommend you refresh your memory, and forget whatever nickname provincial idiots of time gave him. Start with the Lions vs. Auckland game in the early 90s.
Ludicrous claim.

The new fella Sullivan had a great game in the midfield, looks to have good all-rounds skills, he executed a well weighted grubber for Goosen to score, him & Umaga-Jensen are going to be a top midfield combo for the Canes... Love kicked aimlessly at 10 in the first game, he's clearly thought about it a lot as his general kicking game when he came on was very accurate against the Blues, the bloke has a long punt too & as we all know a ton of speed.

The real turning point was when the Canes incumbent players come off the bench & were all on the field - if that fool Holland had started them in the first place we wouldn't have struggled so much throughout most of the match... the Blues were always going to fade a bit towards the back end of the match through lack of match fitness.
JGB looks really fat in those shorts. How can he earn starts when Love plays like that?
Love has so much more to offer than him... they only way you'd start JGB is if Love was out injured.

@nzbloke Jackson Garden-Bachop is just a very average rugby player. Unfortunately Holland loves to pick them.

well, late to the thread. Haven't seen the game yet, but not surprised if we faded in the last quarter given the lack of match practice.
I'm looking forward to seeing the tape though, sounds like the Blues did everything but win it. That's a good sign for the future. Our only job is to make the final of the comp - after that it's on like Kong. It's harder to get decent coaching and play a decent pattern than it is to fix fitness and match awareness in the last 10. So I'm pissed (particularly because my neighbour took the opportunity to wind me up on it), but not devastated.
anyhoo, still feels too early for footy. Had most of a day of IRL live cricket on Sat, with the test match as well, and half an eye on the Ford Trophy ... and then socialising in the evening so didn't even get a chacne to turn it on.
Too soon to say 'this is our year'?

Mate I went to a lot of tests that Zinzan played, was at his first, and never came away thinking he was a dominant tackler. Always thought he a bloody great 8, but never really a hard man. To be fair for Auckland he was playing in a very dominant pack, so was usually tacking going forward. This is no way to downplay Zinny in anyway, he was bloody good, but his nic outside Auckland was Timtam as I said. (I also argued with too,) I think he suffered the nic because many were wanting a Buck clone at 8, he was evry bit as good as Buck I thought, but with a different skill set. Positions eveolve, and that's my argument with Savea, he is a good 8, but not a clone of Read etc.

Just seen the Stats of the game Rakete-Stones made a whopping 11 tackles, Sangster 12.
Riccitelli 10 RTS made 12 and Choat a game high 19.That Rakete-Stones is not too bad a prop is he? Not saying test player or anything, but a he going bloody well at this level, seems ok at scrummimg too.

He seems that to me too, though to be fair he went well when he came on against Crusaders, but I would never think of him as more than a journeyman suited perhaps to the bench.

Yeah, definitely.
Lol I bet if I could be bothered I would find a few clips of Ardie doing same thing, I don't see the point, I am sure almost every player has knocked someone back while they standing there like that, I not critising Read in anyway, but he was known as a good defender not a dominant one. A dominant tackle you understand is where you drive the player AND the ball back behind the gainline, the one you show is a normal front on tackle.
-
@nzbloke Sullivan really impressed me, I actually said on another thread I didn't know if he was that good. I eat my words somewhat, he did a hell of a lot of little things really well, and as you say the little kick through was good vision, and the palm off to RTS was lovely. Bloody good first up game and will be happy to see how he goes.

- I have said it before but there is something about Zarn Sullivan that reminds me of Carter. Maybe it's his economy of movement?
I like that description of Sullivan the younger. There is something there that just looks good.
As for Sullivan the older. Looks like something has clicked with him. He certainly never played like that at the Chiefs. It wasn't coaching at the Canes either as Jordie commented that when he turned up at first training they were all amazed that another team had let him go.
Anyway, good performances from both
