Not sure if this is what you meant, but one common thread between the different job types is substance abuse - whether it's the victim or the suspect.
I imagine it is a range of substances as well.
I've heard from friends in rural areas that meth/ice has been growing as an issue.
we spent 2 nights in Port Macq a few weeks ago, wife saw teenagers on the ice pipe at 6am both mornings while out for a run - boredom is a bitch
When you see the impact of ice induced violence, it's difficult to not endorse adopting a Duterte solution.
I took it upon myself to find out what happens to meth users. Never tried it but found people who had been through it. It seems to my curious, unqualified mind that sleep deprivation is a trigger to the rages, psychosis and paranoia mess that crazy horse has to clean up. Many stories of 3-4 days with no sleep and then coming down is horrendous so back we go for another 3 days etc. It's easy to spot the body language and walking gait for those under the influence. And a 2 litre of chocolate milk tucked under an arm. The ashen, gaunt face and teeth condition are pitiful markers that don't seem to go away.
But yep, that violence and super human strength are a real problem. An old Aus cop friend once remarked "oh for the heroin days when you just told them to go home, and they generally did"

@siam good points. I guess they could raid every one of them, but then how busy are the courts already? What outcome could we expect? Will it change for the better or worse as you say?
I lean toward treating drug addiction - and associated supply chains - as a social health issue first and foremost. The punishment side of any form of substance abuse seems limited in effect.
Yeah mate, and as NZ found out with all the deportations, the new bunch were full on dangerous crims that started taking machine guns to a machete fight.
It's such a difficult issue and for sure incarceration and other measures just doesn't seem to help. Concur on the social health comment. The poor saps I knew weren't nasty people as such

It's the psychosis that's the problem. Almost every other drug can be treated as a health issue. Even violent drug users can be relatively easily dealt with (if you're prepared to possibly contract Hep, AIDS, etc. although generally a much better idea to just let them go). Meth heads are different.

@antipodean yep. Not sure the relevance of the vid. Could be that the merc occupants were unmasked...π

@booboo don't underestimate the positive effects of Engineering in our society.
It's not direct - but even work for dodgy developers winds up with modern, warm houses for families. Engineers make a massive difference to our communities, don't undersell yourself. It's just often a step or two removed from the actual effects.
Oh yeah, can be quite cool seeing shit you've had a hand in building still there and working like it should. My point was more around the positive feelings available in Crazy's job hopefully balancing bad.

Club raffle at the pub raised $680.
Woke up. Nice day in Sydney with sunshine and a cool breeze.
Helped with grocery shopping.
Went to the rugby ground and cleaned out the sheds and canteen with the lads.
Plenty of laughs and helped me mentally set the scene for Season 2022 once we threw out a bunch of shit.
Lined up some kit that we're hoping to donate to Tonga some how. Money we don't have, but spare kit? Oh yeah.
Got home and mowed the lawn.
Quick swim before a simple lunch involving sourdough.
Got the BBQ running for roast lamb.
Went for a massage and fell asleep halfway through.
Now sitting at home in front of the Fern telling you fluffybunnies about a day that was pretty good. -

Figured I'd bump this thread rather than create a new one. Work advice time lads.
Love my actual mahi but senior leadership are making life harder than it needs to be. That is tipping the balance in terms of my (un)happiness at work, but it's buffered by knowing I'm in a good role with a lot of variety in my work. Not easily, as far as I know, found at another organisation, and certainly not if I look at Govt roles.
Young kids and the last few years don't make for a good backdrop for a big change. I'm trying to be objective about how work is going, and I'm conscious I might just be worn out. But nothing looks like changing at work and that is making me feel pretty shit and a bit trapped.
But I don't know if it's bad enough to push me to look, and getting into the job market is kind of terrifying tbh. Mainly as I know the grass is rarely greener on the other side, and I would be walking away from an organisation I've spent nearly 20 years at (career change after the first 10 years).
Family and mortgage situation means I wouldn't want to move to contracting, or at least not as a first step.
I know this isn't a unique experience and moving jobs and changing careers is something people do everyday. I think my commitment to my work, team and the organisation is getting in the way of thinking about me - which feels weird to write down.
Hit me with some fern wisdom team. Do I just suck it up and see what change I can influence until the kids are older (2 and 5 currently), write up a CV and start talking to recruitment firms to test the waters?, buy an expensive toy and not tell the wife!?
Probably needing a vent more than anything. But after so long in the same place I don't actually know what I want to do when I grow up lol.
-
@paekakboyz I can't really give much advice on your situation, my current role (nearly 3 years) is the longest one I've had in 15 years, but my work allows me to switch organisations pretty frequently and I always have a stash of fuck off money on hand which would allow me to quit, do a bit of travel (Asia 3 months, rest of the word a month) before job hunting.
I'm actually not far off where you are with the senior leadership. My direct boss is a mate but the CEO and Board are idiots who do not know how the business runs. If not for my direct boss I would have left already.
TBF, my day to day is actually fine but I've got stuff due in October (re-accreditation of courses with regulator) that the big bosses are making difficult as they don't understand the business. If they make it too difficult I'll leave before then.
But I think you should probably see what's out there, test the waters.
So sorry, not much wisdom from me, just a vent from me as well, but all the best with whatever direction you take.
