Yeah meth/ice and alcohol are very common. Problems from marijuana tend to be when regular users are not having it for whatever reason.

When you see the impact of ice induced violence, it's difficult to not endorse adopting a Duterte solution.

And some of those careers in the nurse/teacher/cop have had salaries stagnate in real terms. Tough gig.

The mount, in SA is purported to be the highest meth usage per capita in Australia.
I encountered them daily on the street and getting their subloximine (?) Methadone drinks every morning at the pharmacies. Really sad sights but so responsive to good morning pleasantries and chats. Most are really nice, interesting people when stable and satiated. I feel more pity for them than contempt. But I'm not dealing with them in their darkest times.
It seemed to my amateur, layman eyes that police were using containment rather than eradication as the long term strategy. For example I can identify many of the dealers and their properties and it occurred to me that it was a "better the devil you know" type scenario. I mean, no doubt the police could raid them all in a couple of days but then what and who replaces them?
Well that's my totally uninformed and guessing appraisal for a social problem that's stayed pretty constant for decades -
@siam good points. I guess they could raid every one of them, but then how busy are the courts already? What outcome could we expect? Will it change for the better or worse as you say?
I lean toward treating drug addiction - and associated supply chains - as a social health issue first and foremost. The punishment side of any form of substance abuse seems limited in effect.

I took it upon myself to find out what happens to meth users. Never tried it but found people who had been through it. It seems to my curious, unqualified mind that sleep deprivation is a trigger to the rages, psychosis and paranoia mess that crazy horse has to clean up. Many stories of 3-4 days with no sleep and then coming down is horrendous so back we go for another 3 days etc. It's easy to spot the body language and walking gait for those under the influence. And a 2 litre of chocolate milk tucked under an arm. The ashen, gaunt face and teeth condition are pitiful markers that don't seem to go away.
But yep, that violence and super human strength are a real problem. An old Aus cop friend once remarked "oh for the heroin days when you just told them to go home, and they generally did"

Yeah mate, and as NZ found out with all the deportations, the new bunch were full on dangerous crims that started taking machine guns to a machete fight.
It's such a difficult issue and for sure incarceration and other measures just doesn't seem to help. Concur on the social health comment. The poor saps I knew weren't nasty people as such

It's the psychosis that's the problem. Almost every other drug can be treated as a health issue. Even violent drug users can be relatively easily dealt with (if you're prepared to possibly contract Hep, AIDS, etc. although generally a much better idea to just let them go). Meth heads are different.

It's not direct - but even work for dodgy developers winds up with modern, warm houses for families. Engineers make a massive difference to our communities, don't undersell yourself. It's just often a step or two removed from the actual effects.
Oh yeah, can be quite cool seeing shit you've had a hand in building still there and working like it should. My point was more around the positive feelings available in Crazy's job hopefully balancing bad.

Club raffle at the pub raised $680.
Woke up. Nice day in Sydney with sunshine and a cool breeze.
Helped with grocery shopping.
Went to the rugby ground and cleaned out the sheds and canteen with the lads.
Plenty of laughs and helped me mentally set the scene for Season 2022 once we threw out a bunch of shit.
Lined up some kit that we're hoping to donate to Tonga some how. Money we don't have, but spare kit? Oh yeah.
Got home and mowed the lawn.
Quick swim before a simple lunch involving sourdough.
Got the BBQ running for roast lamb.
Went for a massage and fell asleep halfway through.
Now sitting at home in front of the Fern telling you fluffybunnies about a day that was pretty good. -
