On topic, can't believe that it was news that a British mother was told to stop breastfeeding in a British hospital.

Not just any breastfeeding, sexual breastfeeding. You get some pretty marginal types in the nursing ranks sometimes, but it's not very PC these days. I love how the newspaper dredge up sexy selfies because that has anything to do with it

Mum ordered to stop 'sexual' breastfeeding, told to go behind hospital curtain

A young mother was told to stop publicly breastfeeding her four-month-old son while in hospital as it was deemed to be "sexual".

Darcie Pennington, 18, was visiting her grandmother at the Royal Liverpool Hospital when she started feeding her son Vincent.

She was approached by a female nurse who told her to move to a private room so as not to make other hospital visitors "uncomfortable".

"I went to sit down with my nan and feed my son, shaking and very upset," Darcie wrote in a Facebook post.

"The nurse then came over and slammed the curtains shut, telling me that I couldn't feed him as there were males I would make feel uncomfortable.

"I asked her why I was being targeted and why she wasn't promoting breastfeeding as a nurse I thought was strange, she told me she was protecting my dignity.

"I then asked her if I was feeding him a bottle would I receive the same treatment - she went on to say, 'bottle feeding isn't sexual.'

"Appalled by this comment I asked her what she found sexual about a baby having something to eat from his mum.

"I then had another nurse come over to me and felt very confronted and harassed.

"Me and my mum quickly got our belongings and left."

Deputy chief nurse Colin Hont apologised on the hospital's behalf saying: "We are aware of a complaint made by Ms Pennington in relation to visiting her relative who was recovering on a ward that is primarily used for recovery from breast and eye surgery.

"We have apologised for the distress that has been caused and we are currently looking into the matter and would be happy to discuss this further with Ms Pennington.

"We fully support breastfeeding and visitors to our hospitals are welcome to breast- feed where they choose to and feel most comfortable," he added.

"We also offer private spaces for mothers who wish for privacy when breastfeeding. We work to maintain the privacy and dignity of all our patients and visitors."

I remember living in Sydney in 2003 and Rars did a "homecoming" tour with his ( awful ) band "Thirty odd foot of Grunts"....anyway you can imagine what some creative graffiti artists changed the last name to with a black marker. Someone did it to ten posters all beside eachother on the top of oxford st. Talk about dedication.

Its more people tend to follow sport that they have been born into, or that suits them in their ability to pick up & play. Pre 1990 basketball was non exisitant in NZ, and we are, you know, not genetically pre-disposed to playing it, and not watching it & thinking "they are just like me!!". So its odd how its become so huge. If you look at soccer in NZ it was tiny, then we had a big wave of Poms come in and try to coach it & its still not that big.

In the states there is a long term following, they pretty much invented it.

I'm not saying its a disaster that people love it, I'm just trying to get the reason for the rise. It'll probably track back to Sky NZ or Channel 3 or someone fishhing round for cheap filler in the early 90's & getting offered the NBA on the cheap because they wanted to hit more markets. So they promoted the fuck out of it, Nike did a huge Air Jordan push & viola.

Still not sure I buy that, I mean what exactly makes us genetically more adept at playing rugby than other nations ?

Soccer argument is tenuous as well, more people play that than Rugby in NZ.

My point on that was that soccer was nowhere till we had a big influx of poms. Almost all our senior coaches were pom immigrants in the 80's. Same in Aussie where a big Greek migrant popualtion in the 60's & 70's formed the basis for their soccer community. Much of the last 30 years half the soccer-roos were Popadopalous's.

Genetically? You mix the sort of genetic stock that could survive 6 months on a boat, farming, a high % of manual labour style jobs, Maori genes, and Islander genes you end up with a pretty good rugby template.

Islander genes have only been a factor relatively recently, I don't see that as a major factor personally. Every single race on earth did it tough with "manual labour" type jobs so NZ is hardly unique there either and the farming example is a bit poor too. Lots of farms all over the world in countries that suck at Rugby......

In most countries the hard labour of clearing & fencing an entire country was done 2000 years ago. And NZ was predominantly farming / manual labour until pretty recently, mopst other nations thats not the case. Its the same reason white SA works for rugby. You have a genetic group based on people who did that work & could survive it.

You are missing the % of the popualtion bit. Its like saying "lots of countries have beaches, why do beaches make Aussies good at water sports!" and ignoring the % of the population living near beaches.

Diet helps enormously. You're not going to make many rugby players on rice or lentils.
