In the US he'd maybe be known. In Oklahoma... outside the US. If I saw him I'd probably think "Is that Victor Matfield!? Steven Luatua after an illness?!" and be excited, and go "oh, nope just some tall no one"

It always astonishes me how much NZers follow basketball. Especially given we are largely a nation of not especially tall, built like brick shithouse people. Average NZ body shape is probably Piri Weepu.

I know people ( all over the world, not just NZ ) are getting fatter but that is a truly baffling statement. 7 footers don't exactly grow on trees in the US you know. A bloke I know avidly follows V8s and UFC despite a) not even having a drivers license and b ) being someone who couldn't fight his way out of a wet paper bag.

Even at my best I never cracked 10 seconds in the hundred metres but I still avidly watch that whenever I can. From what you're saying we should be more into Sumo wrestling but there's not much of that going on in good old NZ.

I'm not having a go I just find your reasoning for being "astonished" rather bizarre.

Not just any breastfeeding, sexual breastfeeding. You get some pretty marginal types in the nursing ranks sometimes, but it's not very PC these days. I love how the newspaper dredge up sexy selfies because that has anything to do with it

Mum ordered to stop 'sexual' breastfeeding, told to go behind hospital curtain

A young mother was told to stop publicly breastfeeding her four-month-old son while in hospital as it was deemed to be "sexual".

Darcie Pennington, 18, was visiting her grandmother at the Royal Liverpool Hospital when she started feeding her son Vincent.

She was approached by a female nurse who told her to move to a private room so as not to make other hospital visitors "uncomfortable".

"I went to sit down with my nan and feed my son, shaking and very upset," Darcie wrote in a Facebook post.

"The nurse then came over and slammed the curtains shut, telling me that I couldn't feed him as there were males I would make feel uncomfortable.

"I asked her why I was being targeted and why she wasn't promoting breastfeeding as a nurse I thought was strange, she told me she was protecting my dignity.

"I then asked her if I was feeding him a bottle would I receive the same treatment - she went on to say, 'bottle feeding isn't sexual.'

"Appalled by this comment I asked her what she found sexual about a baby having something to eat from his mum.

"I then had another nurse come over to me and felt very confronted and harassed.

"Me and my mum quickly got our belongings and left."

Deputy chief nurse Colin Hont apologised on the hospital's behalf saying: "We are aware of a complaint made by Ms Pennington in relation to visiting her relative who was recovering on a ward that is primarily used for recovery from breast and eye surgery.

"We have apologised for the distress that has been caused and we are currently looking into the matter and would be happy to discuss this further with Ms Pennington.

"We fully support breastfeeding and visitors to our hospitals are welcome to breast- feed where they choose to and feel most comfortable," he added.

"We also offer private spaces for mothers who wish for privacy when breastfeeding. We work to maintain the privacy and dignity of all our patients and visitors."

I remember living in Sydney in 2003 and Rars did a "homecoming" tour with his ( awful ) band "Thirty odd foot of Grunts"....anyway you can imagine what some creative graffiti artists changed the last name to with a black marker. Someone did it to ten posters all beside eachother on the top of oxford st. Talk about dedication.

Its more people tend to follow sport that they have been born into, or that suits them in their ability to pick up & play. Pre 1990 basketball was non exisitant in NZ, and we are, you know, not genetically pre-disposed to playing it, and not watching it & thinking "they are just like me!!". So its odd how its become so huge. If you look at soccer in NZ it was tiny, then we had a big wave of Poms come in and try to coach it & its still not that big.

In the states there is a long term following, they pretty much invented it.

I'm not saying its a disaster that people love it, I'm just trying to get the reason for the rise. It'll probably track back to Sky NZ or Channel 3 or someone fishhing round for cheap filler in the early 90's & getting offered the NBA on the cheap because they wanted to hit more markets. So they promoted the fuck out of it, Nike did a huge Air Jordan push & viola.
