Hurricanes 2022

@crucial I remember touting both of them as being future stars of our game (super star is probably a little too far). They are both only 23 or something so they've got plenty of time to prove me right. It hasn't helped that TUJ has spent almost his whole career watching from the sidelines. Hopefully he can catch a break in 2022.
I think 2022 is also a make or break year for PUJ, he's carving up the metres in the NPC at the moment and will be keen to grab that 12 jersey for the Hurricanes. We are crying out for a bigger 12 at test level and I think one of the UJ brother's can stake claim to that jersey eventually if they produce the goods at Super.
You're 100%, at the end of the day it's crystal ball gazing, some players over achieve and others fail to reach the lofty heights that some of us expect.
I've been right plenty of times, but I've also been wrong on players aswell. That's just part and parcel of being a speculative fan.
I'm just glad my pay cheque doesn't rely on it.

When PUJ and TUJ were at school you were touting them as storming onto the scene and quickly becoming superstars. Both good players still with potential to reach high levels (and maybe stay there this time) but haven't exactly set the world on fire
We saw a very brief flash of what could be from TUJ before injury and, as you say, PUJ's candle flared for a moment then he couldn't even make Super level as a must pick. You can blame the coach all you like but an awesome player will demand selection.Don't want to get into a debate on Canes selection but
a. I don't recall anyone saying awesome and
b. "awesome" is an awfully high selection criterion, even for the Canes.
c. PUJ played for the ABs and looked comfortable. It is not like NZ is crawling with good midfielders, let alone having players that "set the world on fire" (strange that international arson is now the selection criteria, I'd be happy for a stable midfield).
e. oh and Christian Cullen says hi.https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/all-blacks/123003336/all-blacks-vs-wallabies-beaming-peter-umagajensen-follows-uncle-tanas-bootmarks-into-camp
Foster continued: āIn the second part of Super Rugby Aotearoa he had a massive desire to play. He was strong with ball in hand and ran some great lines and he beat some very good defenders. Jack [Goodhue] and Alby [Lienert-Brown] both found him quite a handful with some of the lines he ran.āWeāve seen a real attitude with his work rate and heās grown in his defence. Heās a young guy who had a lot of potential when he came out of school then probably plateaued a little bit.
āHeās now learning what it is to work hard and be a little bit more professional off the park. The Hurricanes have done a great job in that space and what we saw when he got the opportunity is someone who is ready to go. Thatās the kind of energy we want him to bring in here.ā

@mikey07 good chance we will sign Howden, he trained a lot with the Hurricanes last year as part of their Under 20s group. Iām a fan of Caleb Delany aswell, heās been really solid and is a similar size to Plumtree.

Believe it when I see it
-
@canes4life yeah almost bet your house on it
-
-
@mikey07 Josiah Maraku should be on the Canes midfield radar unless MP (or the Blues) beat them to him. He trained all season in the Blues wtg and has looked quick and strong for Manawatu. Only 20 but plenty of promise.
-
@daffy-jaffy Unfortunately heād be in same boat as Toala as in get only one game a year but yeah Iād definitely like to see him sign with the Canes

@stargazer said in Hurricanes 2022:
@mikey07 Plenty of green ex-schoolboys without NPC experience in the Wellington region.
Probably Riley Higgins and Someone Else.
But to be serious, hooker is probably the most predictable one. I expect them to sign O'Reilly.
You know for a fact like I do OāReilly is getting that 3rd Hookers roleā¦
-
@stargazer I expect Riley to get a contract at some point in the future, along with Harry Godfrey but both of them are way too raw to get a contract yet.
Hopefully they both pick up training squad contracts.Lol they will probably sign someone like Brandyn Laursen instead. Who knows though, the Canes didnāt sign T Umaga-Jensen and he was seen as a better 2nd five at school than his bro, instead they gave a 5 year contract to B Proctor which made no sense whatsoever.
There was also Connor Garden-Bachop who was another Wellington school player lighting it up back then but heās now with the Highlanders.
Taine Plumtree is another Wellington school player that didnāt pick up a contract and now heās with the Blues.
Iāve given up on trying to guess Hurricane signings these days, they hardly ever pick the players that should obviously be selected.
Just pathetic recruiting at the end of the day.
-
It doesn't really matter who they pick, to be honest. The players who make the starting lineup will be the same old stale players that always do. The odd time that a youngster gets selected (following an injury) and shines, they'll chuck him straight back into the Bs team till he gets sick of being neglected, and will sign for another team.
-
@bobily2 even worse is when they consistently perform at Super Rugby, they crack the All Blacks and then all of sudden they get shunned to the bench for no apparent reason.
I agree, Holland has his favourites and no matter how good other players play, they will never get a proper crack because of that favouritism he has for the likes of Prinsep, Blackwell and Proctor etc.
That, along with the fact that we havenāt really heard much from the CEO since he fumbled Beaudyās contract a few years ago (apart from the odd false promise) and you have yourself a pretty disappointing CEO/Coaching combo.
-
I was surprised the Blues were able to retain Plummer and Perofeta with Barrett back for them this year.
Was hoping the Canes would be able to convince one of them down our ways. Particularly Perofeta being a Wanganui boy.
I just hope Love is our starting 1st five. Don't think I can cope with another season of JGB lol.
-
@yeetyaah said in Hurricanes 2022:
@foobanz be prepared to not cope. I can't see the coaches getting over their hardon for JGB. At least Love is a Wellington player so there might be a small chance that he starts one game against a weaker opponent.
JGB on form is not that bad is he. He will never be an AB contender but Love was clearly not ready last year
-
@winger I think we can do better than "not that bad"
I've said this before but there is no point the Canes persisting with these average players that won't win you a title.
Better to go with youth with an upside than accept mediocrity season after season.
-
You would think that the Canes were one of the teams that talked to Brett Cameron.
āI did have talks with a couple of teams, but it ended up not working out,ā said Cameron, who had already signed a one-year deal with Kamaishi Seawaves in Japan. āUnfortunately, it was just a bit late in the piece to change my mind and pull out of commitments that Iāve got in Japan.
