All Blacks MOTM v Tonga

Bridge played well on debut against Japan in 2018 in a BaaBaas style match that was incredibly open (Japan scored a bunch of tries as well). Since then the AB coaches just seemed to fall in love with him, despite never stepping up against any of the top teams. I have memories of him being put in space and doing less than nothing with it, when in a tight test it's crucial that your outsides can make the most of any chances to score. Just really frustrating to watch.
The "hate" for Bridge isn't against him as a person, it's frustration that he continues to be selected above players that offer FAR more on the wing than him. It's difficult to score tries when your wing brings zero attacking threat, exactly the same reason people despised having Jordie on the wing as well. Not particularly quick, no step to speak of, just really offers nothing in that position at the top level.
It was a shame Rieko was affected by injury when the 2019 WC came around, and we didn't have many other options there as the AB selectors just forged ahead with Bridge against all logic and reason. It was one of many black marks against their selections and tactics leading into and during that WC.
And then we had Clarke in absolutely irresistible form after the RWC, but Bridge continued to get selected ahead of him until injury forced the ABs to pick him, and we immediately saw the benefits of having a winger that offers threat with ball in hand out there again. It's just braindead selections and tactics from the AB coaches - most of our ire should be directed at them rather than players like Bridge or Jordie who they keep chucking on the wing when it's clear they don't belong there.

@booboo well as has been mentioned elsewhere this place has gotten pretty feral of late for whatever reason.
Bitching about players, refs, comms, selectors, judiciary, anything and everything.
Sure this is the place for it but man some do go over the top, I know some is in jest but that doesn't translate well..

IMO a lot of the criticism the Ioanes get is projection. As was mocked here previously, they make mean faces that upset man babies.

We are playing second tier competition that don’t have all their players. We’ve seen NZ super rugby sides play each other a thousand times in the past two years, what is there? They know there is concerns with fluctuating viewer numbers and with nothing different on the horizon they feel they have to do their part to keep some interest.

Good post. We know what Bridge can do. He hasn't miraculously got faster or have more physical impact. He just played as we expected, if a little slower (I think he was a tad faster in the RWC ...
... but still slow for an international winger, and arguably, for an international fullback which I suspect is his best position). Besides, he was returning from injury wasn't he? No, I don't think there was any great reason to play Bridge.
The main grump I have is for the coaches, perfect time to try someone new. We don't have enough winger depth. I think they did a good thing with the midfield (hello JB!) and the loosies (but don't think they needed to pick Scott Barrett could have tried a new lock). -

I don’t understand why you get so triggered by this.Fair enough if his ability or talent were criticised but that’s certainly not the case. At the end of the day the guy bombed a try during a Bledisloe game because of his showboating. If that doesn’t justify labelling someone a tool then I don’t know what does.

I'm not triggered, just find it weird how much he triggers you for stuff other players do.
Christian Cullen and Jonah Lomu both bombed tries in exactly the same manner - in the same game too. Now, I can't be certain but I'm willing to bet a few quid you didn't hold a grudge against them like you do against Reiko.
