A few surprises for me, in no particular order: Chris Harris, Elliot Daly Jack Conan, Jonny Hill, Bundee Aki.

More surprises about some of those left out I guess. Sexton not a surprise for me, I'd maybe pick him for a one off game but a series, not so much. Sinckler is one that does surprise me and Tomos Williams too.

Correction: SIX. Had thought Sinckler was locked in!

Great to see Bundee fulfilling his childhood dream.

Has anyone actually seen SA sides post recently. I haven’t checked in on the “rainbow” cup yet. Makes a change with a bit of mystery about the SA players.

@billy-tell Keo had been putting out article after article about how the Boks are going to smash the Lions, so I guess SA think they're doing alright!

Some left field selections there, O'aki -Wtf? He's no Tualagi stand in. Sinkler out cos he's such a twat, and they'll be in a bubble of just them for two months. Same as Marler. Maybe Gats and co experience of their personalities had more of an effect than normal because of this. Might have effected the national make up too, very balanced, less complaining about that.

Scotland more players in this than the last three together, probably!

the most balanced Lions side I can remember. It's not a national side with extras like some years

Two main surprises to me are no Underhill and no Sinkler. Gatland is right to leave out Billy Vunipola and Jonny Sexton. Think his midfield looks a bit one-dimensional.

Is Farrell a 10 or 12 in this?

Yeah, the feature that stands out to me. Maybe the test XV is not so predictable either.

They're gonna get totally smashed, rainbow charged world champions with almost two years of dry powder will do them in

    @pakman
Navidi has been declared fit, so it's a surprise that he's not there. He is world class.

But in his time with Wales, Gats never seemed to rate him quite as highly as most observers (no idea why). And back row is a very strong area at the moment, so there were always going to be some very good players missing the cut.

I'm not that surprised by Sinkler missing out. Character is such an important element for such an intense tour, and I'm guessing they thought he wasn't the right fit for that reason.

Both. Ability to cover multiple positions must be a huge advantage for selection in a squad like this.

Agree that the squad as a whole looks unimaginative. Think we're in for a pretty physical and unadventurous game plan from the Lions.

Thankfully the Boks will bring the excitement, like in their RWC campaign

I imagine Navidi will be at the top of the list when the first loosie injury happens.

The 1st test in 2017 obviously wasn't played, nor the games against the Highlanders and Blues. 🤣
