@chris-b Sounds spot on. Not a good trend for NZ rugby.

@kirwan Especially when they're paid to promote the game. A lot of very mediocre people in NZ rugby.

At least it wasn’t Tony Johnson

@tim Since when are commentators paid to promote the game? They're paid to provide commentary.

@stargazer LOL, do you know what marketing is? It's generally considered a core role in the entertainment business. They're not there to make snide comments about star attractions.

I kinda get that, but it’s a bit naive if you truely believe it.

They’re paid by Sky, Sky need to sell as many subscriptions as possible, Sky will want their commentators promoting the game.

It's one thing I grudgingly admire about the NRL commentators. Most commentate like they genuinely believe it is The Greatest Game Ever, and no argument could ever be entered into.

And then for Origin they multiply that by a factor of ten.

It’s why when Nisbett does all his complaints about scrums he’s actually harming how rugby is perceived. Save that shit for an analysis show.

Result not a surprise. The Blues have the stronger roster at the moment. The Hurricanes didn't help themselves by giving away too many penalties. This going to be a long season for the Hurricanes.

Some signs that give a little hope. Aumua and Ardie Savea shave started he season with a bang, best I've seen the Bus since he returned to NZ. The lineout was solid. I thought the Hurricanes defended well in the first half. But that was never going to be enough. As they say "it's the hope that kills ya."

The second Hansen era was mostly a disaster, but perhaps the weirdest thing about it was the regular selection of Fifita, a player who at best had all the flaws that Ioane was criticised for, when Hansen wouldn't have a bar of Akira Ioane - who was always significantly better than Fifita.

The psychology and failings of Hansen were really strange.

One thing I noticed right at the beginning of this video and right throughout the match, it Nisbett calling Devan Flanders... "Flahnders". Is that how to pronounce it? Is this some posh Kiwi pronunciation I'm not familiar with?

@winger he’s got evidence of something I’m sure of it.

One thing I noticed was the best spell the Canes had was in the 10 minutes before HT with Blackwell in the bin

Then with Blackwell, Prinsep and Kirifi (playing like a fool) all on the field in the 2nd half the Blues took control.

Fifita provides a bit of attacking spark. The other three don't.

Its going to be a disappointing year for the Canes if the coaches don't change their approach. But they (or I think Gibbes) loves Prinsep and Blackwell. And won't give any other player a fair go (although it does seem some of the other locks are injured at present. Inc IWL)

Wasn't Akira dropped from the starting lineup by the Blues just last year? And Fifita was hardly a regular selection

@tim pls calm your Aucklandness. Looked pretty clear.

How do you know it veered back before passing the posts?

That was my first thought to explain it, but the 2nd replay showed it never going outside the posts.
Honest question - did anybody watching that 2nd replay think there was any way it didn't go over?

When ball crossed goal line it was directly above posts. Commentators said ruled would have been a poster.

Not for the last time this year, I'm going to say that Pierce would've been the better Harbour lock to play in this game.

I thought GCT was good. Surprisng thing is that he adds punch to Blues scrum.

@taniwharugby I was surprised the Canes did not use the Referees challenge especially on the Otere Black Pass , it looked forward out of the hand , line ball at best ..
