Reds v Blues

MOTM Andrew Lees and our scrum.
-

Australian ref? Must be.

Lees. Has wrecked every game he has reffed this year.
Feigns competence by talking like a traffic cop but is way out of tune with the game in front of him.
When you see players all look at the ref in anticipation when the whistle goes you know they have no idea what he is going to call.
That last scrum penalty hat had the YC was a good example of his style. Once he had given a warning you knew that whatever happened at the next scrum he would do it. The Blues TH did nothing wrong at all. He kept pinging the Blues for "not earning the turn" but that was a clear example of the Blues being square and the Reds turning.

Not his fault that the Blues had tits for hands though. -
A cripple fight if I've ever seen one. Reds lacked organisation in defence. Blues lacked ideas in attack.
Ref had nothing to do with shoddy midfield defence, poor handling and lack of attacking ideas.

Was really surprised at how lethargic some of the Blues looked tonight. -

Yup can't argue there. Visinia looked a million bucks in the first 20 before deciding to leave his hands behind him. Li was worse. Sa'u and Moala's miss on Kerevi was a disgrace as well. Looked like they didn't care at that stage.

Still think the ref was awful so it was hard to get anything going on attack with him in the Reds back pocket. Our bench really got us out of jail tonight (not that a draw is worth celebrating).
-

Don't worry everyonez, Tana's rebuilding a new culture.

Yeah, maybe they should get Hammett in. -
Guys like Gibson and Tuipulotu were outstanding in week 1 and just havent followed it up. Id be tempted to give Latimer a run, could use his nouse and leadership. Sau has to be replaced - he stood out for his high errors in an error riddled team performance.
-

Well, that was forgettable.

Thought Reiko showed glimpses but also dropped a few balls. Hope he gets another shot.

Would like to see Ranger come in for Sau. He hasn't done much so far this season.

Surprised the Blues didn't get a card earlier in the game for the scrum because you could tell the ref had made his mind up pretty early.
-

Nah, not sure about that. If Tana starts pissing off senior players and turning the place upside down then maybe. But some serious concerns:

- Scrum

- Skills

- Rugby nous

On the plus side, he's nailed the fitness and (it appears) team unity. A draw away is a good start ... you dno't build a championship team overnight. Will be a very interesting few weeks coming up post-bye.

Game report: Suck performance from teh Reds, suck performance from the Blues, suckiest performance from the Ref. Don't watch if you enjoy rugby much.
-

Harsh on Gibson I feel. He's been one of our better ones I feel. Patrick needs a spell on the bench. He was great last week against the Hurricanes and would have made more of an impact if he was used like that last night. Thought Matenga looked alright when he came on.
-

West needed to take control of this game and didn't. He was guilty of some aimless kicking, one of which led to a Qld try.

The Moala-Sau combo didn't work at all - they lacked communication on defence.

Nick White has some work to do in the bye week.
-

I see Tana is critical of the ref - and fair enough the reffing was poor, however I wish Tana would focus on some things that are within his control, such as the decision making and general skills of the team. Hall put in a wasteful kick in an early attacking opportunity, West put in a number of aimless kicks, one of which lead to a Reds try, and Sau butchered a try by hogging instead of passing which was then followed up by a stone cold drop by Rieko Ioane. The Blues were generally very poor under the high ball too.

I am sure that Tana isn't focusing on the ref. He can make comment about one aspect while also working on other ones. Pretty stupid to think he isn't looking at all of those things you mention.
-

I'm sure he is - but it comes off as pretty empty when the team played absolute pants for the majority of the game and he's pointing to mistakes by the ref. From a fans point of view seeing the skill level of the other NZ teams and then seeing the skill level the Blues put out when not at Eden Park year after year gets a bit old.
