I like the new bonus system , like has been said in the old days , you could have scores like 38 - 35 , both teams walking away with a bonus point , was it good attack or shit defense or a bit of both ? 
 
The new system reminds teams to stay accountable with their defense , which is what 50 % of the game is about , 
 
It rewards teams who get both areas of their game right , not just one

Just watched the game. What that fuck was that last try to the tahs? How on earth did the TMO see a try there? And why was the ref rushing the Highlanders on the last couple of penalties?
 
Anyway, great to watch, Highlanders just so technically accurate for the most part. Sopoaga just keeps getting better and better, really impressive tonight - especially in defence. Put in quite a few important tackles and got into good positions.
 
Thompson looked handy, did a very good job, as did Tongia.
 
Bloody handy loosies this year too, not missing Nasty or Hardie at all.

Crash

Whilst I agree the officiating wasn't the best in that last 2o mins, I think the Landers pretty much shut up shop after scoring that 4th try.
Looking at the stats, the Landers were were on the wrong end of nearly all of them, it is amazing they actually walked away with the victory. 
Think some of the more amazing stats were Tahs 220 passes to Landers 99, Tahs 24 offloads to Landers 8, Tahs 157 Carries to Landers 86 and in defence
Tahs 18 Missed Tackles to Landers 30, Tahs 56 Tackles Made to Landers 140. Those are some head-scratching stats. . 
Thought the big winners were the Landers back row of Elliott, Squire and Christie - bloody hard-working or what. Out-played the much-vaunted Tahs back row by some margin. Landers just need to keep the focus for the entire 80.
But bloody well done - as said earlier coming away from Sydney with a win and 4 points in the bag, is huge and certainly not to be underestimated.

Yeah...nah. Compare that to any other penalty throughout the match. Clearly not time time wasting.

Yep.The ref seemed to be influenced by the crowd and match situation. 
Threatening to reverse penalties is bollocks. Far better to stop the clock. Fundamentally you can't referee the last 5 minutes differently to the first 5. Similarly when Landers shut up shop and had advantage one of the tahs commited a most blatant professional foul to force the penaltywith sole intention of getting a lineout. Apparently according to laws professional fouls are cardable 
Blaming a ref for a loss might be not on but critiquing his performance is a must.

So which is it? To give the 3rd choice some experience, he can't go 80 or that he is apparently injury prone in the last 10 mins? All seem pretty far fetched to me when that thinking is only applied to him.
Looks more like a preconceived tactical change to IMO but i can't see what the benefit is.

No doubt the Highlanders have something, I'll be damned if I know what it is - taking a team of relative unknowns i.e. Thmpson, Faddes and Tongia, (when their first-stringers are out injured) and walking away with the spoils when you think of some of the names in the Tahs - Hoopah,Beale, Mumm, Folau, Skelton Phipps, Dennis - these rare all regular Wallabies.

How does conceding a penalty force a lineout? If the line out was in the best interest of the Waratahs then the Highlanders should have kicked the ball into touch.

Did you see what the Highlanders were doing? Did you see about 4 minutes of pick and go for zero field advancement? They retained possession through 2 penalty advantages
 
The Highlanders didn't want a lineout even with their throw. The Tahs only option was to have a lineout with a Landers throw to try and steal it. Hooper deliberately conceded a penalty to get the ref to blow his whistle.
 
I'd imagine the very short discussion the Highlanders got ridiculously threatened for was whether to tap and keep picking and going or risk a lineout.

Was wondering about that one with Phipps right on the line when it was ruled that the tacklers didn't realise. Wasn't Phipps still on his feet and pushing forward?

Ok I give up, you're right. Joseph is doing it because he's an idiot with no idea, there's no benefit at all.
 
However, I was expecting to see Parker take a shit on the field after your complaining. Turns out he actually went ok, apart from being held up in the tackle once. Go figure.

I half agree with respect to Hooper. He conceded the penalty not to force a lineout throw but to just end the advantage. Hooper is a great fetcher - he could have stolen the ball or a penalty could have been conceded.

The highlanders neither wanted to stop play or go for a lineout. They were quite happy eating up the clock till the siren went. The expertise of the Landers pick and go made it abundantly clear that the Tahs were very unlikely to regain the ball.
 
Hoopah knew this, so he deliberately disrupted play to get the ref to blow his whistle thus causing a restart. The ref then hounded and demanded the Landers get on with it so they kicked the ball out, (they didn't particularly want a lineout, they'd have preferred to keep picking and going), but that bloody whistle means you have to stop playing :idiot2: .
 
Hoopah sucked the ref in and the Highlanders decided they'd win the game by winning the last lineout. They had to act quick or else dickhead was going to reverse the penalty
 
How hard is this to grasp? Other options for the Highlanders were a scrum or tap kick (which they didn't really have time to organise thanks to a rattled ref).
