@Stargazer was about to post the same. And they are locals to me. Zarn Sullivan Mewett and Karpik were surprise omissions for me. Younger Roots may have gone close too.

Good squad. Should be a hell of a game.

@ARHS I think Karpik lost his spot to Harmon, who had a very good Mitre 10 Cup season. I think both had a good chance, but only need one 7.

Not surprised Mewett missed out, considering the quality of the players they've picked at lock, unless you count Selby-Ricket's criminal conviction against him (I've been wondering about that).

I would have left Proctor out of the squad, named Wainui as a midfielder and named Zarn Sullivan, but he's still very green, so may have to wait.

Douglas would have to be the third locking option. Prinsep isn't really a lock.

    A very green midfield trio.

I think both will be on the bench based on who has been selected. The starting loosies being Harmon-Prinsep-Messam.

    @Bovidae I think the starters will be 6 Prinsep - 7 Harmon - 8 Douglas.

@Stargazer You did great research work on this up front! Am pleased with the selections. Roots covers lock. Trask keeps Sullivan out and toss between Harmon and Karpik. Might be fun to revisit that European XV now. Pretty thin on backs left over. I get Drummond Cameron Gregory Collins McKay Goosen and Hunt. Little beyond that outside 9s. But plenty of forward talent without a big match at season end. Strange Dunshea Boshier Robinson Jacobsen Hunt all unlucky there.

According to this article on Stuff, one more player will be added to the squad. Another lock maybe?

@Stargazer Douglas has been very average this season, and didn't even start for Canterbury at the backend of the season.

    @ARHS

The NZ European choice of forwards is good enough; 9 and 10, too. I assume some of the first five-eighths can play at fullback. Plummer can play at 12.
But the struggle is real for the positions 11, 13 and 14.
Obviously, I may have missed a few.

Players named in random order per position:

    1 Coxon - Cobb - Mackintosh - de Groot
    2 Coltman - Riccitelli - McAlister - Slater
    3 O'Neill - Iosefa-Scott - Jager - Thwaites
    4 Strange - Scrafton - Goodhue - Romano
    5 Dickson - M Brown - Pierce - B Evans
    6 Robinson - Thomson - Sanders
    7 D Hunt - L Boshier - M Jacobson - Gibson - T Christie
    8 Flanders - G Evans - L Jacobson - Matich
    9 Drummond - Christie - Roe - Hammington
    10 M Hunt - Gatland - Plummer - Burke - S Hickey - Cameron
    11 Gregory
    12 D McLeod
    13 Collins
    14 Goosen
    15 McKay

I've assumed D Havili isn't available; if he was, he'd be in the Moana Pasifika squad.

The Māori All Blacks squad is (with Province, Super Rugby Club, and Iwi):

    *asterisk denotes new caps

    Props
Josh Hohneck, Otago, Ngāti Manuhiri/Ngāti Whātua
    Pouri Rakete-Stones, Hawkes Bay/Hurricanes, Ngāpuhi
Marcel Renata, Auckland/Blues, Ngāti Whānaunga/Ngāi Takoto
    *Tamaiti Williams, Canterbury, Ngāpuhi

    Hookers
Ash Dixon (c), Hawkes Bay/Highlanders, Ngāti Tahinga
*Kurt Eklund, Bay of Plenty/Blues, Ngāpuhi

    Locks
    *Manaaki Selby-Rickit, Southland/Highlanders, Ngāti Raukawa
Isaia Walker-Leawere, Hawkes Bay/Hurricanes, Ngāti Porou

    Loose Forwards
    Billy Harmon, Canterbury/Crusaders, Ngāi Tahu
    Reed Prinsep, Canterbury/Hurricanes, Te Rārawa
    Liam Messam, Waikato, Ngāi Tuhoe
Whetukamokamo Douglas, Canterbury/Crusaders, Ngāti Porou/Ngāti Whakaue
*Ethan Roots, North Harbour/Crusaders, Ngāti Kahungunu

    Half Backs
Bryn Hall, North Harbour/Crusaders, Ngāti Ranginui
Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi, Bay of Plenty/Chiefs, Ngāti Pikiao

    First five-eighths
Otere Black, Bay of Plenty/Blues, Ngāi Tuhoe/Te Whānau ā Apanui/Ngāti Tūwharetoa
    Fletcher Smith, Waikato/Hurricanes, Ngāti Kahungunu

    Midfield
*Billy Proctor, Wellington/Hurricanes, Ngai Te Rangi/Ngāpuhi
    *Rameka Poihipi, Canterbury, Ngāti Whakaue
    *Quinn Tupaea, Waikato/Chiefs, Waikato/Tainui

    Outside Backs
    Sean Wainui, Taranaki/Chiefs, Ngāi Tuhoe/Te Āitanga a Māhaki/Ngā Arikikaiputahi/Ngāti Porou
    Shaun Stevenson, North Harbour/Chiefs, Ngāpuhi
Jonah Lowe, Hawkes Bay/Hurricanes, Ngāti Pikiao
*Kaleb Trask, Bay of Plenty/Chiefs, Ngāpuhi

That’s a better squad than I was expecting.

Given all the loosies are on the smaller size, they would need to add another lock for the bench.

Yup, Prinsep is the tallest loosie with 1.92m.

@kiwiinmelb no. Imagine saying all Pākeha are eligible for selection for the English team? It's a completely different country and the languages do have differences.

So does a Cook Islands Maori have Maori whakapapa ?

Genuine question because I don’t know , not saying you are wrong by the way.

My understanding is he must have that plus be a representative of New Zealand rugby union and have Maori whakapapa .

    Very different to English selection

No, at least not in the same sense as a New Zealand Maori. i.e. a NZ Maori whakapapa traces back to an original NZ Maori ancestor / ancestors. A Cook Island Maori would not

The loose forward mix isn't very balanced. Too many 6/8s and only one real no.7.

Seen nothing in billy proctor, rather wainui in midfield over him and Joe Webber been in great form for Waikato so did think he would make it but more or less squad I expected

@family-man Joe Webber will play at the Ignite 7s tournament (same weekend). That's also why other players (such as Kurt Baker, Regan Ware, Caleb Makene) aren't available. Agree about Proctor.
