@raznomore said in The 'How is Fozzie going?' thread:

On topic, an AB's coach needs to have an edge. The ability to put the fear of god into a player. In this day and age, it's become harder and harder to have that edge because in the professional era all the power is with the players. Yes even in the ABs, no dickheads, environment.

But I'll say this, Fozzy has about as much edge as a spherical pillow.

They need to at least have some presence and command the respect of the players. Rennie strikes me as someone that does that big time - the Wallabies are bloody lucky to have him in charge given their 'cultural' issues they've had in the past. Foster really doesn't give that impression at all.

Of course I'm speculating from the outside in so who knows, but he doesn't exactly have a track record of getting teams to buy into a coherent game plan.

@No-Quarter I agree, Rennie just oozes Rugby IQ, like this guy knows what he is talking about. Fozzie looks like he is an expert at the Maccas menu.

He the most under qualified ABs head coach since Mitchell. I still hope he can prove us all wrong

Don't know what is worse, a catastrophic year or two leading to his exit or him limping along to another world cup failure.

and for top level NZ coaches, who could forget the exciting 11 month regime of Andy Moles

    Andy Moles - Wikipedia

From Griqualand West, via Hong Kong and Scotland to NZ. Followed by a stint as a school coach, and then Afghanistan national coach.

I think that coincided with that horrific period where no top six batsmen had a 100 between then, only McCullum and Vettori down the order had a few.

hijacking this thread, but yep. Goddamn. I googled it. Some talent there - Taylor, Vettori, Oram, Ryder, but also Tim McIntosh, Jamie How (who I really wanted to step up), and Daniel Flynn.

My issue with BB at 10 is in the past the backline just has not hummed with him, really static, and for some reason his kicking from hand in that position not inspiring either.

Yeah, lets not all forget that a huge portion of the shit play the ABs have served up over the last 3 years has had BB at 10. Individual brilliance aside, the backline and tactical play has been frustratingly poor for a long time.

Whoever the 10 is, I think they are going to struggle with these tactics of playing off scarps of ball and flinging it wide at the first opportunity without the forwards generating some momentum. That just leads to messy disjointed play in the backline. Then the ball gets kicked away.

The backline tactics have been junk for ages. I wonder who the backline coach was 🤔

Jamie Joseph with Tony Brown as the backs/attacking coach might have been the answer

@canefan and to hope stall or slow any downward trajectory! and that's against a backdrop of us not really being at the top of our game over the last few years. That's why sticking with Fozzie was the wrong call imo.

The board went for consistency with a slightly new flavour versus new and dynamic (compelling!) but lacking international coaching experience (age group aside). I think they saw that as at the safe call. Lame.

If we end up losing Razor like we've lost Rennie I will be beyond pissed.

There are options. I know Gatland was far from great in his first year with the Chiefs, but he has a strong test record. As you say, I hope Razor sits tight and waits to see what happens. Schmidt is off on hiatus but if the opportunity arose to join a new cartel, who knows? That's just off the top of my head

I forgot JJ and Tony Brown

@Kiwiwomble didnt they say they had sent some form of correspondance (text probably haha) too pretty much every coach in the world with Kiwi ties to apply?

They arent gonna offer him the job without him applying, similar to Rennie, sure he was likely a better option than Fozzie will turn out to be, but he never applied so could never be given the job.

@taniwharugby yeah, probably a bit of ego in it, i always got the impression he wanted a bit more wooing than just reply to our posting on seek, and then NZR might have been too proud to actually go after anyone...so ended up having to pick from the ones that applied rather than possibly the best coach
