I'd assume that too, but you just don't know what they've been coached to do.

    Anyway, a few thoughts.

Impressive effort by Klein to stay out there. I guess the coaches were a little loathe to bring on all the pre-schoolers on the bench. Throwing not great though: called for one not straight and got away with another late in the game.

I thought there was a tiny knock on by Fidow in that third (?) Wellington try. As he attempts to scoop the ball up it goes down off the fingertips and bounces back up into his hands.

We didn't seem to have any ability to create anything in the midfield, albeit in limited opportunities. We certainly have some issues in the backs and the midfield is absolutely key to that, but I think Poihipi and N Punivai is our best combination with McLeod out so I'd stick with them.

The young props coming in should stand us in good stead for SR, assuming the Highlanders don't pinch them. For SR we get Moody and Ala'alatoa back, plus Jager and Harry Allan, maybe Bower also. Add the promising Brewis and Newell to the mix and the next gen might be sorted.

Beautiful Isia Punivai good finish from another 20 year old pup ,7 players 20 year old or younger in that squad of 23.

This is good stuff, even if it isn't enough to carry us to a title this year. Brewis, Newell, Mellow, Darry, Fihaki, I Punivai and Williams?

Oh yeah, and I had meant to add that Garden-Bachop's droppie attempt was the most half-hearted kick I think I've ever seen in that situation. Someone described it as a chip and that's what it was. A bloody mile away from a full blooded attempt.

Yep plus Klein and Burke are only 21 if we can keep hold of a few for SR future looks great.

Hope so, because we've seen some erosion recently as young blokes have gone elsewhere for opportunities. I'm really unimpressed that we haven't retained at least one of Sam Darry (Blues) and Will Tucker (Otago and the Highlanders). Whitelock only has a year or two left, surely, and Strange and Dunshea are decent SR players but punching at the moment due to lack of depth nationally. That leaves Barrett as our only relatively youthful, class lock in SR. Both Darry and Tucker are local lads, 2m+ and have national age grade pedigree. Really disappointing.

Collins is pretty ordinary eh. Looks to have good skills but needs to go back to club rugby and learn the ropes - I lost count of the amount of turnovers he was involved in.

Yes big lose losing Darry and Tucker I reckon we may lose Isia to the Highlanders and Newell,Brewis and Williams must be vunerable to be signed elsewhere .
I would drop Harry Allen off to keep one of Newell, Williams or Brewis who was strong today.

They really need to give one some game time. JGB is too inconsistent. For eg he was VG v Auckland. This week was not one of his better games so he shouldn't have been there at the end

I was pretty surprised by that. It was a fantastic setup by Welly and in all reality it wasn’t a hard attempt distance or angle wise.

Check his NZ TAB account 😀

It was JGB's 26th birthday. Maybe he had his birthday party before the match instead of after. 🍺 🍰

Maybe Gen Whatever is bucking the old stereotype that classy players will bide their time in the Crusaders system, and instead they want instant gratification elsewhere.

All guys who left Canterbury and/or the Crusaders system early in the last few years.

Those young props really kept Canterbury in that game (along with Wellington's poor handling). Scrum seemed to be about the only place Canterbury was on top.

Isi Tuúngafasi seems to be doing well with Ta$man, as well.

As I may have mentioned before, why the investment in Irish Oli Jager? Seems like there would have been plenty of NZ props who would have developed as well or better given the amount of time he's been in the system.

@Chris-B I read somewhere that Jager started as a flanker, but was converted into a prop. Jason Ryan seems to rate him.

@Chris-B Jager doesn't look big enough for me to play prop. I'm with you though, yes he's had a few injury problems, but he's been around for about 5 seasons now and hasn't really made a lot of progress tbh.
