@antipodean if a team is in a bubble together then the whole team will be quarantined and unable to play. One team not being able to play means the competition in full form can’t continue.
Which isn't negated by the following, nor the Australian solution:
“In New Zealand the teams land, they come into isolation for four days, from days 5-7 they’re in a bubble of 15 which doesn’t allow teams to train in full squads, and from days 8-14, they were set to be in bubble of 25 which is restrictive also and makes it difficult for the way teams want to prepare.
-
@Machpants what he should be concerned about is the safety of players. Someone here said that 7 of the Argentina squad have been infected. So the advice from the NZ medical professionals was 3 days individual quarantining, followed by smaller group bubbles ( we currently require 14 days Individually from everyone) was required. So is he asking us to adjust our rules for rugby players? ....Is he going to add to that special treatment for millionaires, foreign students....when families can’t see sick loved ones....Mark Robinson should suck it up like everyone else and say the NZRU does not expect special treatment. The rules were set by the same medical professionals (not the Government) whose advice has given us one the best Covid results in the world. Certainly not perfect but caution has paid huge dividends. I would have loved for the games to be in NZ but following advice from those whose job it is to provide that advice, not special interest groups with vested interests, is the minimum I expect from the Government.
As well as this the NZRU have made a mess of negotiations re Super Rugby - they are and should be under pressure.
-
NZRU made a mess of the negotiations. Mark Robinson is a nice guy but looks out of his depth.
But they were dealt a bad hand of the NZ government who should be doing much, much more to support and faciliate professional sport, especially Rugby, in New Zealand. The cancellation of the Blues-Crusaders game (it should have happened behind closed doors) for a handful of cases was a terrible over-reaction when the risk to and from players was almost zero. No wonder sponsors and insurers were so nervous about the Rugby Championship in New Zealand. If New Zealand had a Prime Minister who genuinely loved Rugby and the All Blacks, the Rugby Championship would be taking place this year in NZ.

@Machpants I thought the whinging would have stopped when Cheika left. Rennie is sounding more and more Aussie every day.
-
Rennie was a whinger when coaching in NZ. Don't see why coaching Australia would change that.

Well he knows his career in NZ is dead.

@Bones They’re right, really. It will certainly be NZs to lose, even Ozzie should be more competitive. Arg will be a waste.
It’s only a bunch of friendlies, I doubt they’ll even turn up

There is more chance of a 4-match Bledisloe Cup series than a full Rugby Championship taking place.

Awesome, who doesn't want more of that?
-
@Bovidae Not ideal obviously, but predictable. Can't rule out the ABs will be paddling the same boat too if reports are senior players are uninterested in being away from home that long.

Imagine the damage done to the Wallabies psyche if they lost?

Totally a hollow win-lose situation if too many stay home

I'm not that fussed by a weak TRC. It's just a shame to ruin a potential once in a lifetime proper NPC to accommodate it.

If first choice players start bailing, I wonder if it triggers a bunch of abstentions?
-
Probably already mentioned but I am not going to break a fern tradition and start reading the whole thread, so open question to the thread....
Do we know if we have to play a set minimum amount of games before SANZAR nations lose money from existing TV deals? Do all nations need to be involved? It has been mentioned in this thread that potentially players who don't play could earn less? But what about the games themselves?
The way I see it unfolding now (without knowing the above) is it appears all unions appear to be scrambling to play for the income, any meaningful game would just be a bonus.
-
@bayimports agree, it all looks too contrived.
I'm all for a full strength npc, promote the shit out of it, get crowds along and the NZRU will have to write off 2020 income due to government interference just like the rest of us. 🙂
-
Not directly answering your question, but the second BC test in NZ is purely an income-earner as this was not part of the 3-test series originally scheduled. This is one of the reasons RA and Rennie threatened to boycott the first game.

Then essentially there must be a minimum game coverage somewhere, I do wonder that if SA and Argentina suddenly cant make it due to covid, then if the additional game that was previously a bonus game becomes a "must play" contract sticking point. Meaning that although I laughed at a 4 match NZ v AUS series earlier. Perhaps it is still a possibility. (Not saying the Bledisloe has to be available), but potentially that becomes part of the minimum must play games for anyone to get paid in the RC.

The dates for the two Bledisloe Cup Tests in New Zealand have been confirmed by New Zealand Rugby (NZR), with the All Blacks to play the Wallabies at Wellington's Sky Stadium on Sunday 11 October and a week later at Eden Park in Auckland on Sunday 18 October.
3:30 pm kick off.

“It was quite laughable really, it was the first I had heard of it,” Mo’unga said. “It’s a tricky one because as players we are made accountable for the things we say and do and it’s quite tricky when speculations come out like that and it can be harmful and sad for family members during these uncertain times.
“I’m sure players with newborn babies, soon-to-be-fathers will have conversations and make those decisions in their own time with [All Blacks coach] Ian Foster and the management.”

For those that weren't bothered to read the allblacks.com article this was the other main news.
Robinson said confirmation of the Bledisloe Cup dates meant there would be a change to the Mitre 10 Cup schedule for both Bledisloe Cup weekends, and NZR would be working with provincial unions regarding these changes.
There are 3 games on Sundays so all will need to be moved to avoid clashes. Also, Wellington and Auckland have home NPC games the day before the Oct 11 and Oct 18 tests.

Interview with Mark Robinson at 4:35 mostly about the Test schedule

-
@Machpants that you, Machtrump?
-
I wonder who the refs for the BC series will be, taking into account the quarantine restrictions in both countries? If they use SA/UK/French refs they will need to arrive early and maybe officiate in some M10 Cup games before the 2 NZ tests.
Perhaps it will end up being NZ refs in NZ and Aust refs in Aussie if WR permits. The joys of a covid world.

-
@Bovidae they'd need to get here soon then, cos its only a month away.

Dane Coles, not a wimp
I hear him!
This may be obvious but is good to hear:
"NZ Rugby do it really well making sure our families back home are looked after and we have got good support and that makes it a bit easier."
