@Catogrande Maitland's yet another poach from Tokoroa.

Didn’t Tokoroa provide players for four nations in the 2015 WC ? NZ, Aus, Scotland and one of the islands?

Was Isaac Boss at 2015 RWC (Ireland as opposed to islands)?

Might go for Brett Iti at 9 instead of Bryn Hall.

Neil Sorenson might be the best example of a halfback who should have been an AB. I would also include Kevin Putt in that list. Ignored by Mains and then good enough to play for the Boks.

Coulda been. With that lid I’m amazed any nation wanted him though.....A363D855-B12D-4AF4-8519-CF68075847B9.jpeg

To be fair, Putt was also ignored by Grizz. I was about to mention him on this thread, so good shout from you.

Yeah, I thought Putt went to SA in 1992? Hard to blame Mains too much for that.

@Nepia Putt played really well in the 1992 CANZ series (against Forster and McGahan amongst others), but decided to leave later in the year when it became clear he wasn't going to be selected despite his form. He didn't play in NZ in 1991.

Mains biggest issue at 9 was overlooking Bachop for most of his time until finally seeing the error of his ways in time for the RWC.

I know EXACTLY how your mate feels, although thankfully it wasn't Caleb Ralph who shagged my wife before we met, but another Canterbury / Crusaders AB of dubious qualification. This made cheering for Canterbury in particular a little odd at times.

    Cheers.
What was wrong with his style of play?
I can't remember why he was dropped.

@sparky Agree re Brett Iti. He'd have played 20 tests in the current environment.

@Nepia Yeah, probably one of the biggest indictments on Mains' career was not being able to recognise Bachop as the best 9. In fact he selected Ant Strachan, Jon Preston, Stu Forster and I'm sure at least one other ahead of Bachop, although I seem to recall Bachop wasn't actually available for each of Mains' seasons?

    @Catogrande
Tokoroa poaching is a joke harking back to when Stephen Jones claimed Mealamu (?) was poached from the island of Tokoroa. Tokoroa is a small town in NZ.

Man I’m having terrible flashbacks to the Forster/Ellis and Forster/Mannix AB combinations in 93 and 94...

Bachop did come back into the team for that 94 Boks home series.

Why do I have faint memories of Bachop being unavailable because he was playing in Japan or Italy or something?

@shark Grim played for Mains in 92 but wasn't in the best of form and was dropped. He was unavailable in 93 . He then moved from Linwood to Old Boys because he was in his own words, Jaded. He played with a young Mehrts outside him and forced his way back into the AB's in 94. Mains wasn't the greatest selector but I don't think he was to blame for Bachops time away from the test side.

Post 91 RWC there was the need for a clean out and also a number of players who seemed to lose their enthusiasm for the game. Even Foxy
