Other than a couple of decent wins recently.
Well they knocked over the Saders, only team to do so, and broke a years old winning streak doing it. They are where you'd expect a team with a crap tight five and no decent 10

I thought we'd come last, and IIRC before the season started I was not the only one on here that thought so. We exceeded my expectations

Really? I thought everyone defaulted to the Highlanders as last. But yeah the more glaring issue that was cited for the canes (10) turned out to be pretty decent at this level.
People going on about crap tight five and 10 are just being lazy rehashing old lines. JGB ended the season very well and is a positive, not a negative. He creates plenty of space and sets the attack well but mud sticks.
Crap tight five? Lomax, Scrafton, Coles, Aumua are all either ABs or have been touted for higher honours. Blackwell and May get a lot of stick but they perform a role well.
Main problem seemed to be a team where not everyone was on the same page and bit part players trying too hard (e.g. Aso today). When Jordie didn't boss the game, the Canes struggled.

Unfortunately the role Blackwell and May perform is “jersey filler”. Meanwhile a guy like IWL is sitting in the stands watching.

Losing our coach before the season certainly didn't help either

A bit like Mafileo, Bower, Whetton, Johnstone, GCT, Goodhue, etc, etc....

Yeah that's probably the biggest thing and why there's such a massive change between when Jordie is bossing and when he's being controlled by the other side.
-
@Bones After a few problems at the very start of the season, Aaron Mauger and Tony Brown have done an excellent job for the Highlanders this season. A strong game plan, competitve in almost every contest and getting the best out of all their players.
By contrast, the coaching of the Hurricanes this year was a mixed bag. The team looked excellent when Ardie, TJP, Jordie or PU-J were bossing it, but ill-disciplined and fractured at others. In terms of team culture, we're a long way behind the Crusaders and the Blues at the moment.
-
I only caught the first half, was an entertaining game, but gezz it certainly wasn't the Canes day with all those butchered tries. Aso touching the line when noone was near him was just comical. Congrats to the Landers, looks like they played some great footy to run away with it in the end.
Overall a good season for the Canes though. I really thought we'd struggle without Beauden who has been the only reason we were winning in recent years. Awesome to see Jordie and PUJ really step up this year.
Obvious highlight of the year was beating the Saders away. That was just fucking awesome and a game I will actually remember (unlike most SR games) so that was a huge positive for the year despite coming up short on the end.

Canes clearly couldn't cope with the devastating blow of losing Goosen and Van Wyk from the team this week.
Re the backs. PUJ is better at center. Aso never had his best game (he should have stayed at 2nd 5) and Tiatia offers SFA (so the two wingers were a big step down). And maybe Perenara's leadership was missed
Tiatia had three starts and three losses
-
@Winger I fail to see what Holland sees in Tiatia he had a good season last year in both Super Rugby and NPC but this year has been nothing but error prone. Would have been better off giving someone else game time like Rayasi or Lowe.
-
@mikey07 What I found really strange is that Tiatia isn't a winger, but was shifted from the bench to the wing, when Goosen withdrew. Rayasi was already named on the bench; why not give him the start? He's a winger. Lowe was with the squad in Dunedin as well; if they didn't want Rayasi to start, they could have started him.
Instead Rayasi got only 12 minutes game time. Lowe got 14 minutes last week. Toala only got 7 minutes. With this game being a dead rubber, why not replace underperforming players like Tiatia, Aso (and probably Proctor fits in this category as well) with these players, who must have been desparate to get a run?

Mate you fail to see what he sees in a player then go on to describe exactly what he's seen in the same sentence!
@Stargazer it's pretty odd when coachiare extremely reluctant to play players for seemingly no particular reason eh.

Tiatia had a great first game at FB in super rugby (last year). But was not up to much from then on. This year hes been poor. Hes one of two selection (the other is Blackwell) that I can't work out. Unless these two are dropped then the Canes will never win the top prize.
Tiatia and Blackwell both starting = three losses. A team can handle one poor player but not two. I also don't rate Prinsep highly but he's in a different league to these two

Love the highlights with Hunt absolutely smoking it for the try down the sideline and then the hilarious minties moment for the canes try. Sublime to absolutely awful...glad I was able to laugh!
Was surprised that Jordie couldn't get close to him. Is Hunt that fast or does Jordie lack top end speed ? Makes me wonder if Jordie is really realistic wing option.

Hunt is no slouch and seemingly gets to top speed within a heartbeat. I'd say he's DMac lite.
Don't think Jordie's pace would be a concern on the wing...looked like he was catching him just didn't have a long enough field...
