<p>Looks like we had different roundels for different theatres, this badass machine is an RNZAF tempest flown by 486 squadron out of Tangmere in the uk.</p>

<p>Although were RNZAF they had quite a few Polish and Czech flyers in the squadron too and a guy called Jim "Black Jack" McCaw whos grandson is fairly well known in NZ . Their squadron motto was Hiwa hau maka [beware the wild winds] because they flew hurricanes, then typhoons and then tempests. Check out the size of the pilot compared to the size of the plane, 2200 hp and four 20mm cannons in the wings and usually rockets under the wings for targets of opportunity like tanks trains and suchlike. There's a video of McCaw blowing up a train with his rockets , unfortunately it was loaded with ammunition or something and he had to fly through the subsequent unexpectedly massive explosion . <p>Thats Geoff Fiskens p40 warhawk the Wairarapa Wildcat, he was the highest scoring commonwealth air ace in the pacific. He was a farmhand when war broke out so was unable to join up as it was considered an essential job so he mounted a successful campaign to piss his boss off so much he fired him. </p>
<p>He joined the RNZAF and flew Brewster Buffalos in the defence of Singapore ,unfortunately althoug he managed to down a couple Buffaloes were pretty useless against the Japanese aircraft.The Japanese bombers flew a couple of thousand feet feet higher than the buffaloes could for a start . Singapore fell so he got reassigned to the Solomon Islands and they gave him this beast which although not as manoeuvrable as a zero was better armoured and had more powerful guns. He managed to shoot eleven japanese planes down before his accumulated wounds meant he had to be helped in and out of the cockpit by his ground crew and he was sent home to NZ .</p>
