<p>Aunty flags is a good way to describe the Lockwood designs</p>

The black on the left represents the night sky, while the the blue on the right represents the coming day.<br><br>
Supporter Frizzell, whose work has extensively explored Kiwi iconography, said he found the four flags the panel offered lame, particularly the near identical fern designs.<br><br>
"'They're so f------ tragic I can't believe it. I'm sure Kyle [Lockwood, designer of two of the fern flags] is a lovely boy but that is such an aunty flag, such a nanny flag." he said.<br><br>
"We all know the PM loves that awful fern that we see on the side of airplanes. He's obviously walked into the room and said this is what you're going to choose."<br><br>
Red Peak immediately struck Frizzell.<br><br>
"It's the New Zealand flag. I'm totally convinced. The more I look at it the more I can't see how you could better it."<br><br>
"The night, the day, the sky. The evocation of the meeting house barge boards. The Tangata Whenua is in the house, literally, without screaming it."<br><br>
Dustin has been interested in New Zealand identity as long as he has studied design, and felt something like an obligation to contribute.<br><br>
Like most of his supporters, he found the four shortlisted flags disappointing.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>He was careful not to criticise the panel directly, who he believes have been handed a very hard task, but he had hoped a more forward-looking design might make it through.<br><br>
"They've looked towards those familiar motifs instead of trying to expressing something is perhaps new or innovative," he said.<br><br>
"As a pretty grizzled designer, it's not about you, it's about getting the right solution."</p>
<p>The flag is similar but not identical to another design which won Gareth Morgan's competition.</p>

It's really growing on me that one. -
Oddly enough the first thing I thought when I saw it was that it would look pretty badass on the shoulder flashes on our armed forces uniforms while the Lockwood flag would actually look a bit lame . No matter what we choose people are going to take the silver fern on a black background to sports matches .<br><br>
Edit like in this photo, the hypnoflag and the lame version of the fern would look pretty silly here -
<p>WTF.</p>

<blockquote class="ipsBlockquote">The lack of any actual designer or graphic artist on the flag panel is annoying in a bang-your-head-on-the-wall sort of way. As someone annoyingly wiser than me has pointed out, just imagine a panel tasked to select alternative national anthems without a single musician.

seriously don't understand these flag movements starting just as they are officially discarded. First the kyle lockwood small blue large black that Tony veitch got behind..way after it didnt maje rhe top 40 now this red peak bollucks which according to stuff is the peoples choice...where do they get this tripe last I looked the facebook page only had 1000 likes..hardly compelling. Im sure I could get a 1000 likes if i put a picture of my balls on a flag...i have had a few whiskeys, challenge accepted!?

I think for some reason people were opposed to the change, then been thinking about it, heard some compelling arguments and decided hey, this might be a good thing, bandwagon already has its colours chosen, but, hey there's a guy over there with room on his one...<br><br>
The number of comments I have seen claiming 'NZ has spoken, leave our flag alone' or some petition to save our flag (try voting?) it makes me laugh...people on the negative believe so strongly in their view they think everyone else does, the exact same thing happened in the referendum up here I mentioned earlier...apparently the majority didn't want it, the people had already spoken, well before I got my chance to vote.<br><br>
As to this peak design, IMO it looks more like a corporate logo than the others. -
I'm going to be fascinated with the referendum results. Generally I'm only hearing from the lunatics on social media but i wonder what proportion of NZ that is. It would be good if they had some sort of tickbox next to your flag choice.<br><br>
Tick here if the reason you have chosen this flag is because you feel as a New Zealander this flag represents your country<br><br>
or tick here if the reason you chose this flag is because of any of the following<br>- TPPA, Due authority, War veterens, treaty of waitangi, John Key, US corporations, the illuminati, big pharma, steel beams, tinfoil hats etc

Syrian refugees, falling milk powder prices, Chinese house buyers, Maurice Willismson being a cock , mortgage rates , Auckland property prices<br><br>
That's just off the top of my head and I didn't even mention dolphin midwives .

You say that as if the public had any say over the final 40 or the final 4. Those were chosen by the panel - when the choices are made it's only natural that people will feel aggreived that their chosen flag didn't make it... hence the campaigns to have them added.<br><br>
I don't envy the panel as keeping everyone happy was simply impossible, but I do think the final 4 designs are very poor and I won't be voting to change to any of them. Just my opinion of course! People need to make their voices heard by actually voting, but just like the general election half the country won't even bother and then that same half of the country will proceed to bitch and moan about who/what got elected. -
<p>seriously though, how do they come up with the final however many for people to vote for?</p>
<p> </p>
<p>It is never going to be perfect...Imagine how many woulda voted for the Kiwi laser one if they put up submitted flags to the vote! How do you say this one doesnt qualify for the vote, this does...</p> -
Damned if I want the nation's flag to look like a road sign. Do a deal with the NZRFU or forget about it.

The momentum behind the red peak design is in its simplicity. People have come around to realizing that a flag needs to be recognizable on a small scale and easily drawn. All respect to the panel members but for some inexplicable reason they completely missed these points. Throw in some added subtle Maori symbolism and links to NZ's heritage and environment and any basic design is a winner. It's ridiculous that we have to choose from three variations of a complicated fern design and a black and white koru. Hopefully common sense prevails and we have additional options to vote on or this is a massive opportunity lost.
