One further surprise in the final, the annual Wimbledon final out TV-rated the first England World Cup Final appearance since 1992. A consequence of "live international cricket returned to free-to-air television for the first time in 14 years" perhaps...

    Jul 15, 2019  /  Media

4.5 million Britons watch Cricket World Cup final on Channel 4

Viewing peaked for drama of super over but still lagged behind Wimbledon final

I know I don't speak for a shitload of people but I seriously don't get the obsession with tennis. It's a dreary sport and, McEnroe aside, played by a bunch of folk completely devoid of any personality. Imagine if Roger Federer had to talk up a match the same way Tyson Fury does for a fight ?

The world ( sporting or otherwise ) boggles my mind sometimes.

Fair enough, that will still leave me three and a half years of gloating before we inevitably get dumped out in the first round next time.

Fuck that, not everyone on the Fern actually lives for all things Rugby - Cricket is my first love and only AB Tests feature on my rugby interest. I care bugger all about domestic rugby for the most part but when something involves ODIs and Tests for Cricket - I'm in like Flynn.

Not a fan of Stead coming out and saying a draw is something that could be considered. Fuck that, it's a world cup - just figure out a better way to award the winner.

To be honest - in a game like cricket - if you get a tie, which very rarely happens, I don't see what's wrong with just sharing the title.

In a game like soccer, I can see why you need a tiebreak.

But, if necessary - why not just come back the next day and play another match? If TV companies can't sort out to cover the replay then fuck 'em.

p.s. rugby needs to sort something better out than the drop-kick-off, which was what supposedly happens last time I looked. Far rather share the title than indulge in "fucking foolishness". 🙂

I feel like a part of the tradition of cricket is that two teams have a fair crack at each other and if at the end of the day neither team has won, you shake hands, call it a draw and have tea togethe.

What's the mood among English cricket fans? I imagine a fair bit of relief to finally get a WC... but in bizarre circumstances.

Given they had a whole day in reserve, surely continuing playing cricket till they found a winner is better than an arbitrary rule or - God forbid- a draw. Remember the Lions fiasco? Maybe it's the North Island in me but I'm not a fan of sister kissing.

Careful admitting this. I constantly get ripped a new one on here for admitting I don't drop everything to watch a Super Game and the fact I can't recognise every single Hurricanes player on sight ( or know how to stalk them on instagram )

I'm older than most here and nothing a keyboard warrior can say here can compare to Bosnia, Belfast or Bougainville

I'd actually feel slightly sick about the result if we'd been the ones awarded the Cup. Thankfully there are some good memories I cxan bask in - like knocking out India in the SF - that is something i will saviour for fucking years

This one seems worse than the Lions fiasco - we still got the draw and lost!

It's a bit like kissing your sister and then being accused of being a pervert! 🙂

oh and one thing I will say -Eoin Morgan has been excellent in his graciou response along with what I've seen from most of the England side - unlike some former England players who I would happily throw under a bus or in front of a train

We all know Kane would have declared the match a tie and share the spoils with the English team because he's apparently the reincarnation of Mother Theresa in cricket pads.

Me too, although I would still rather us be crowned champions. But yeah, it would feel incredibly hollow and certainly not something to gloat about.
