Flag
-

Fair point BSG. I'm finding myself discussing their relative merits when the fact is I'll probably vote for the current flag.

Which is weird really when I think about it. For anyone who wants the status quo why does it matter which flag is up against it? It's like voting for which one is second best.
-

This is one of those topics that is really hard to gauge public opinion. It seems like there is a majority not wanting change, but they are also very vocal.

Yeah, those opposing something are generally most vocal. A lot of people I've talked to are pretty keen to change it, but that is a small sample of people.

I'd like to change it, but if it doesn't get changed I won't lose any sleep over it.
-

I think its a shame all the best fern designs are already trademarked as I prefer the stylised versions the AB's and NZC have to these.

For that reason I quite like the koru although I agree with all negative comments about it. I just think a flag should be unique and simple and it ticks both those boxes
-

We have had 1 example up here recently where there were 3 options to use a currently vacant building which went to referendum:

1 Hundertwasser Art Centre and Maori Art Gallery

2 Maritime Museum

3 Knock building down

Now if you have believed the noisy folk (social media, letters to the editor etc) no one wanted this project to go forward, yet >26,000 voted (more than we had for the last Whangarei local body elections), over half voted for option 1, with the other votes split maybe 60/40 in favour of option 3; vote was FPP not majority too. Both option 1 & 2 required the Council to stump up a few hundy grand to earthquake proof it too.

Once this happened many were cynical that the vote got split between 2 and 3, rather than an option of 1 or 3, even though the results would indicate most preferred option 1.

people are still b1tching about it being fixed 3 months later.

Empty can rattles the most.
-

Surprised they didn't give the option of the simple white fern on black flag, which quite a few people were wanting.

I think it was in the brief that they avoid that one as most people don't understand the conventions of a black flag.
-

Of those four designs the red and blue fern is the only one with a chance of beating the current flag, but even if it did it would get changed in 10-20 years by another government when a better design comes along.

The whole change the flag campaign has been pushed by pr pakehas and douchebags with marketing degrees, and it has felt that way to the masses.
-

I want one with black on it

So Blue and red is out for me

Blue and black looks just far too boring for me. Do we want a new boring safe flag. I hope not.

So it black and white. The actual fern design is a bit more modern. And it does reflect what NZ is all about. This flag I think would be used at sports events whereas I don't think the other two would be. At least I wouldn't

Re the flag final 4 revealing .My god this was poor. It looked like the committee was made up of people who were on the old side and dated. No wonder NZers have not been that involved with this process. Appoint a modern slightly more trendy person to front the committee at the least rather than an old bloke and NZers might been more involved. I haven't really followed it but give me strength.
-

But the black and white is close. Why not vote for this one?
-

I don't think I can vote actually (last time in NZ was 2011 RWC Final which would be over the 3 year limit). However I would likely vote for the black/white combo in the first vote and then really have to think about my vote in the second ballot.

Regardless, I think this committee have needlessly overcomplicated things. A white fern on a black background is the foundation of hundreds of logos in NZ culture both in and outside of sport. How they accepted a red/blue and black/blue variant of the same flag but could not include the unoffical alternate flag beats me. It seems like they are trying to make a statement.

I would love to hear their rational as to why that one was excluded.
-

is amusing some of the opinions out there, this on Richie expressing his view on the flag.

He's an influential public figure and after the ABs announcement at Parliament it's like he's been awkwardly shaking hands with JK behind the scenes. I know we are all entitled to an opinion on the flag or other political matters, but I think this should've been swiped away when the journalist asked
-

I'm now thinking a white flag with a white fern with a thick black outline may have looked good

OK but we do use black flags a lot at sporting events. So as a country we have ignored this convention

The more I think about this NZs colors are black and white. So why not just accept this and have a flag reflecting these colors.
-

No one with a design background on the panel... that could have been a factor. Prefer the black/blue but not by much over the red/blue combo.
