A bizarre choice of the 4 flags. You had to have two Kyle Lockwood flags as those have been the most talked about but I haven't heard anyone barrack for the other two flags. I think "Red Peak" (a minimalist design) or "Haere Mai" would have been included. Of the 4 I like 1 and 3 and would probably vote to change to either flag. However, I definitely don't like 2 or 4 and would probably prefer the current flag.

I think they have tried to offer an option to all views
 
The red Lockwood one is for the traditionalists that also want change
 
The black Lockwood is for those that want the flag to change that little bit more and reflect the liking for black
 
The koru is for those wanting a complete change away from the past
 
The Fern is a compromised version of the de-facto flag of white fern on black.
 
 
The black Lockwood one offers an opportunity to almost use 3 flags in certain circumstances being a combo of all.

With this change the Navy's flag? Or will they still fly the white version of our current flag? Likewise the RNZAF ensign with the Kiwi roundel

I prefer the ones with a fern on them, with the southern cross. I'd also like black on it, but the red one is more striking.

The one with the koru on it looks like it belongs in a shaolin temple, or on the secret volcano lair of some evil empire.
 
Top left or bottom right (blue fern or red fern) are the tough picks for me. The red IS striking, but the blue reflects the seaside nature of pretty much the whole country.

Surprised they didn't give the option of the simple white fern on black flag, which quite a few people were wanting.
 
Black and blue Fern/Southern Cross for me.

A couple of days ago a 9/11 survivor died of cancer and from stuff comments I learned. 
Most of the hijackers were found alive and well in the Middle East

Auditors were at the twin towers investing billions stolen by Donald Rumsfeld 
In the weeks leading up to the plane crash men were bringing thousand of pounds of thermite into the twin towers . 
I'll read the flag comments when I get home , obviously I'm not going to expect anything sensible in them .

That is much easier to compare. The black and white fern looks too short on the flagpole, almost square. The koru is just odd. The fern with red catches the eye most. The black and blue version is pretty but anonymous.
 
Anyone else think that the rest of the world may see the fern in the Lockwood designs as a white feather?

After ww2 the rnzaf had a silver fern instead of a kiwi in the middle of their roundel and changed it for that reason

I am still undercided whether or not I want change but I am pleased I have an opportunity to choose

Fair point BSG. I'm finding myself discussing their relative merits when the fact is I'll probably vote for the current flag.
 
Which is weird really when I think about it. For anyone who wants the status quo why does it matter which flag is up against it? It's like voting for which one is second best.

Yeah, those opposing something are generally most vocal. A lot of people I've talked to are pretty keen to change it, but that is a small sample of people.
 
I'd like to change it, but if it doesn't get changed I won't lose any sleep over it.

I think its a shame all the best fern designs are already trademarked as I prefer the stylised versions the AB's and NZC have to these.
 
For that reason I quite like the koru although I agree with all negative comments about it. I just think a flag should be unique and simple and it ticks both those boxes

We have had 1 example up here recently where there were 3 options to use a currently vacant building which went to referendum: 
 
1 Hundertwasser Art Centre and Maori Art Gallery
2 Maritime Museum
3 Knock building down
 
Now if you have believed the noisy folk (social media, letters to the editor etc) no one wanted this project to go forward, yet >26,000 voted (more than we had for the last Whangarei local body elections), over half voted for option 1, with the other votes split maybe 60/40 in favour of option 3; vote was FPP not majority too. Both option 1 & 2 required the Council to stump up a few hundy grand to earthquake proof it too.
 
Once this happened many were cynical that the vote got split between 2 and 3, rather than an option of 1 or 3, even though the results would indicate most preferred option 1.

I want to like the black and blue (because you know ... black) but the red is just nicer, friendlier.

I think it was in the brief that they avoid that one as most people don't understand the conventions of a black flag.

Of those four designs the red and blue fern is the only one with a chance of beating the current flag, but even if it did it would get changed in 10-20 years by another government when a better design comes along.
 
The whole change the flag campaign has been pushed by pr pakehas and douchebags with marketing degrees, and it has felt that way to the masses.
