He's not the champion we all envisioned but Ruiz Jr deserves those belts. He works hard, has lightning hands and real ring ability. This is not Butterbean. This is a 33 and 1 boxer who took Joseph Parker to the cards and many thought Ruiz had won. Parker, love him or hate him was(and still is IMO) a top 5-6 heavyweight. You do not get to a record as the one Ruiz has without being a serious prospect.
It's easy to say so now but it was clearly a mistake to take Ruiz on is such a way. I do not believe AJ's team put in enough homework on Ruiz.
That said these British boxers are a bit chinny. Fury(to a lesser extent but still have long thin neck for a boxer and the glancing blow that got him going down from Wilder was nowhere near one of Wilder's best), Whyte and AJ are all a wee bit vulnerable when one sneaks through. This is heavyweight boxing, they can all knock each other out of course but I think it takes less to get these 3 fighters off their feet.
The phrase 'Ring IQ' has come up a lot pre- and post- this bout.
Ruiz's team had recognised a weakness in AJ and exploited it.
It was a risky move, which put Ruiz on the canvas for the first time in his career.
But after Ruiz made the count, AJ went back to the well and Ruiz recognising that dealt with it and caught him on the counter. Same to end the fight.
Ruiz's reading of the risks & rewards in the moment was better than AJ's.
Fury has this, Whyte and Parker don't.
In rugby terms, Ruiz is NZ; Fury is Wales; AJ, Whyte & Parker are England; and Wilder is Samoa or Fiji.
A truly bizarre analogy for a guy undefeated in 42 pro fights.
Yeah struggled with that one, but who would he be then?
Unorthodox, with tremendous skill and athleticism who does well against smaller, less athletic opponents but when confronted with a serious challenge struggles.
He should have one loss to his record despite chinning Fury.
Edit: Maybe NZ Maori then?

I disagree, he knocked Fury down twice, that's hardly struggling.

Fair enough.
Do you think a draw was the correct result? Or did Wilder do enough to win it?

I remember going Wilder at the time, two knockdowns speak for themselves but scroll up a few messages on here and you'll note I admired Furys heart. Still do. Amazing to get up. A rematch will be incredible.

Yes. If it ever happens.
Just went through Wilder's record.
Hasn't really fought anyone of note or fought anyone who's beaten someone of note except Fury.
But I guess that can be said of most of the Heavyweight decision.

I hear that but other fighters are so wary of his power which speaks volumes.

I scored it after the fight and had Fury winning by 2 points with the knockdown included ,
I think with Wilder , you throw all conventional shit out the window when judging him,
He isnt going to beat you on points , but can you survive in there without him hitting you ,
Fury fought a brilliant fight , but was within a second or two of being knocked out after all that good work , if he hits him again in the rematch , maybe next time he doesnt get up

Interesting development.
AJ knocked down/out sparring resulting in concussion in the lead up to the fight

@MiketheSnow losers excuses no?

TBF it isn't AJs camp that are claiming the 'excuse', they have gone out of their way to deny it.
If true however, all other fighters will now be hoping to get a (cheap) shot in behind the ear and see if AJ has recurring issues.

Who knows?
Certainly didn't look himself before or after the smack in the 3rd.
-
rumors have circulated for a while that AJ gets the wobbles up a bit too easily when getting hit in sparring , that has been going around for some time
rumors are rumors , but where there is smoke there is sometimes fire, would not be that surprising if it was true
-
There was also a story doing the rounds that JP had an anxiety attack in the dressing room ahead of the fight. Apparently connected to JP's dad blowing up at Hearn after the fight. They also mentioned the knock out in training as part of that... who knows what is legit and what is bullshit - we are talking boxing after all!

I’m not his fan so I don’t want to be seen as making excuses for him but
The way he looked when he came out would would support that , and then there was the relaxing neck massage when he got into the ring , which looked odd .
Who the fuck wants a relaxing neck massage just before you are about to fight ?

Notice also AJs eyes during the fighter intros....all over the show...whereas normally hes supremely confident.

@kiwiinmelb and @Nogusta it would be really, really shit if that rumour were true. These guys do legit damage to each other and if your mindset ain't right that's bloody dangerous.
I haven't heard of a big fight being canned on the night for anything like that? I guess they felt it had to go ahead no matter what? At least Hearn did according to the gossip. Surely this is too big to not come out if there is any element of truth to it.

Been many fights where the preparation hasn’t been spot on ,
Another major upset , when Tyson got beat by buster douglas , footage later emerged of him being dropped in sparring .
When Floyd had his comeback circus fight against Conner ,
There was talk he was getting touched up by Errol Spence,
Hard to keep secrets in boxing , always people there witnessing things who have mouths .
I don’t see it as an excuse, sport is cruel , you have to get things right or it’s bad luck unfortunately -
@kiwiinmelb Okolie, Dubois now Kabayel has hurt him in sparring. It's a bit concerning if Agit Kabayel is hurting you in sparring. He's a good fighter with good movement and ring IQ but isn't known for his Punching.
-
Here is tyson , who seemed indestructible at the time ,
getting dropped in sparring in tokyo in his preparation for Buster Douglas ,
We know what happened there ,
he later talked about his really poor mental attitude at that time

I'm still absolutely flabbergasted someone like Buster Douglas beat Tyson. Just unbelievable.
