Maybe I’ve been out of the loop for too long. I try to keep up with the new names etc but I am finding it hard to watch the canes this season. The WC year has meant anything but consistent selection and I understand the perceived need for that. But most of the games have looked like preseason games. Fuck all crowd. So bugger all atmosphere. Not a lot of top draw play and as good as the Jags have been this year there was no fucken way we should have lost to that team.

I dunno may six years in the bogan Mecca that is the Gold Coast I’m just too far removed. Honestly I think they just look shit. But so do all the other NZ teams, Crusaders aside. And I don’t think my living in OZ means I’ve suddenly developed a dislike of NZ rugby...

HURRICANES SQUAD NAMED TO TOUR SOUTH AFRICA

Hurricanes head coach John Plumtree has named a 27-man squad to tour South Africa for their Investec Super Rugby matches against the Sharks and Lions.

The squad features the return of club captain Dane Coles and experienced loose forward Gareth Evans who have been sidelined with calf injuries.

Coles last featured for the Hurricanes in their round five match against the Chiefs while Evans has not played since the round two match against the Crusaders.

The pair played club rugby in Wellington yesterday and satisfied Plumtree that they were ready to make the two-match tour.

"We have been patient with both players through their rehab and we think that is really going to benefit us at the back of of this season," he said.

The touring squad features a 16-forward, 11-back split and also sees the return of first five-eighth Beauden Barrett who missed the Hurricanes loss to the Jaguares due to the second of his All Black rest weeks.

The Hurricanes returned to work on Friday following the second of their byes and Plumtree was pleased with the attitude as they prepare to travel to the republic.

"We were obviously disappointed with the result against the Jaguares after what had been a good four week period for us," he said.

"The next two matches are vital for us in South Africa as we push for a home quarterfinal but we know the size of the challenge against two quality sides who are also fighting really hard for places at the top of their conference."

That’s a much better excuse for not watching Rugby than I have

    Some injury updates:

    • Fidow isn't playing atm due to fitness related issues from his shoulder injury.
    • Ben May had minor surgery on his knee but should be okay for the playoffs.
    • Fraser Armstrong has a minor back complaint.
    • Coles is still having trouble with the calf, so much so the Canes made him get a scan on his back.
    • Chase Tiatia has a hamstring injury.

Shame about Fidow. Potentially the dynamic prop that the Canes need. Like The Tongan Bear - a big part of the Canes winning squad - but also injury prone. Coles. It looks like time has caught up with him. Hope not though

Both Xavier Numia and Alex Fidow featured on the bench for Oriental yesterday. Strange that Numia was named as reserve hooker and Fidow as reserve looshead. Must have been a teamsheet mistake.

I feel sorry for Nehe Milner-Skudder; he has no luck.

    From his instagram:

Halfway through what's been a challenging year. There was plenty to work towards and look forward too on the Rugby to-do list but unfortunately due to ongoing issues with my shoulder from a prior surgery not going as well we'd hoped, it was the best decision to go under the knife again to get it sorted. I've been through "a few" injuries but this has easily been the toughest one - both physically and mentally. However, I'm not ready to give up anytime soon, love a good challenge and have so much love and support around me #Grateful 🙌 Obviously I'm guttered at how the start of the year has panned out but as the great MLK once said, "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." ✊ Much love to you all ❤️

For such an articulate guy he still had to throw in a 'guttered'!!

Was it SBW that really intro'd that to NZ rugby parlance? or is some other mofo to blame.

All the best for your rehab NMS, sucks things haven't gone well with his rehab.

Makes sense though, if NMS has been on the piss all the time no wonder his rehab has been shithouse 🙂

Was discussing misuse of words with Ms boo jr yesterday. "Guttered" came up. She was incredulous.

(P.S. don't start me on "verse" and "versing".)

HURRICANES WELCOME TYREL LOMAX ON FOUR-YEAR DEAL

Rising young All Blacks prop Tyrel Lomax has signed a four-year deal with the Hurricanes through until at least 2023.

Lomax, who has strong ties to Wellington with extended family living in Wainuiomata, will join the Hurricanes ahead of the 2020 Investec Super Rugby competition.

The son of former Kiwis international John Lomax, who played 15 tests for the Kiwis and had a long professional league career with the Canberra Raiders, North Queensland Cowboys and Melbourne Storm, Lomax has made a significant impression since he shifted back to New Zealand to pursue a long held ambition to be an All Black.

After making his Super Rugby debut for the Melbourne Rebels in 2017, the 23-year-old joined Ta$man in the 2017 Mitre 10 Cup and quickly established himself as first choice tighthead which earned selection in the Highlanders Super Rugby squad in 2018.

He was selected in the All Blacks last November where he made his All Black debut against Japan after a number of strong performances in Super Rugby

Lomax also impressed for the Maori All Blacks when he represented the side on its end of year tour of Canada and France in 2017.

Hurricanes head coach John Plumtree was naturally delighted to have secured Lomax on a long-term deal.

"His potential is obvious for everyone to see. He's a very impressive young man who is developing his game at a rapid rate. He is a powerful player, has a strong skill set and we are really excited about working with him," he said.

"It's great to be able to bring Tyrel back to the Wellington region where we know he will receive a lot of support and quickly establish himself in the Hurricanes club."

Hurricanes chief executive Avan Lee paid tribute to the amount of work the club's high performance team had put into negotiations with Lomax about a possible move to Wellington.

"Having talked to Tyrel we know that he will make a big contribution to the Hurricanes moving forward. Tyrel is a significant signing for us," he said.

"It is an area we want to strengthen and we believe we have the perfect person to help us do that."

It’s a shame his initials are NMS and not SBW otherwise I’m sure he’d be straight back in the ABs

    @Stargazer

Lomax (an excellent signing) and Fidow. Very promising. It might turn a weakness into a strength

We just need another good LH (maybe Numia) and then (maybe) the Canes will end up with a VG front row. Then find another 1 or 2 good locks to partner Walker Leaware and the forwards without injuries will compete with any team.

The backs look as strong as any team as long as they can hold onto Barrett and Perenara. But we need to find better backups. Garden Bachop has a VG game against the Blues and could develop into a good backup but Fletcher Smith looks ordinary at best and a decent replacement needs to be found for him (hopefully he's only signed for 1 year).

Christie looks a bit up and down. I was a lot more impressed with Judd. So Judd and another good HB with Perenara 👍

The Canes now have the makings of a very strong team. Right up there with the Crusaders.

The issue though that super rugby has is unequal teams. Its something NZ rugby need to address. So if all NZ teams are more even then overseas teams will have a better hope of winning. Otherwise super rugby will slowly die.
