I think everyone decides to make lame digs about Wellingtons weather cos deep down they know that everywhere else in New Zealand sucks complete arse in comparison to the best little capital in the World.

It's great, but a bit difficult to enjoy when you're soaking wet and trying not to get blown away in a gale. We went back to Lower Hutt one Christmas and after yet another day of drizzle my brother (who barely remembers NZ) asked why we hadn't come in summer. But if you don't give a shit about the weather then all good 👍.

Waaaiiittt a minuuute.... No one has pulled you up on this? Back?

And as for a guy whose most common handle is "ACT" giving Wellington grief....

Bones you're so triggered ( understandably so ) you've mentioned the wrong ferner. If I was @Rancid-Schnitzel I'd demand some sort of apology.....

What? Sorry you townies aren't able to comprehend referencing 2 different posts.

I'm still waiting on RS' explanation though. He conveniently passed over that part of my post.

What explanation do you need? I don't think I kept a journal from my holiday in 1990. I recall it rained most of the time and every train station into Wellington was covered in graffiti.

just a bit more explanation around why the word "back" was used...

@ACT-Crusader haha this comment makes me think you've either been to Palmy or Wellington, but not both because they are nothing alike.

Been to both and have been living with the regret ever since

Because I was born and lived in Lower Hutt. Unfortunately I haven't made the pilgrimage back for almost 30 years. I hope it's improved since then.

Queensgate is now a Westfield and the Grumpy Mole has closed. It's delightful.

@Bones Ahhh Queensgate such a delightful experience. To be fair though the earthquake damage has completely shat on that place.

Speaking of which, you can't beat a wendy's cheese dog. Got to be better than beef on a hot plate.

I don't know what is sadder, you mocking my cuisine in another thread or me actually coming across and commenting on it. Typicial ferning really.

Wendy's ? no wonder you've hit the ton, that's not even real food.

@MN5 mocking? Hardly. You enjoy your beef on a hot plate, I've got no problem with that.

If we're going all nerdy with graphs, then I'll post this, too.

Two years ago, I was asked to read NIWA reports to compare the weather of in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. It showed that the maximum temperature in Auckland is on average 3 degrees higher than in Wellington, and two degrees higher than in Chch. And although the amount of rain in mm per year was marginally higher in Wellington than in Auckland, Auckland had most rainy days per year of the three biggest main centres, and particularly more rainy days than Chch. Chch had the most hours of sun per year, Auckland the least of the three main centres (but again, the difference with Wellington was small). The number of days with gale force storm per year is clearly higher in Wellington, but more or less the same in Chch and Auckland.

So the amount of water coming down in Wellington may be slightly higher, Auckland has more rainy days. I wish I'd also had a look at humidity, because one big advantage of Wellington over many other places in NZ is that it doesn't have that awful humidity when it's warm.

Nothing beats the weather in the Bay, of course.

Forgive the pun, but I find Wellington's wind reputation to be overblown. I moved here a couple of years ago, and yes, it can be a bit - shall we say -breezy. But the truly blustery days - at least those that affect you when you live in/near the CBD - are probably a couple of handfuls a year.

Palmy is as windy (there's a reason the wind farms are there) just with none of the redeeming features of Wellington.
