Ben Smith is a Unicorn?
Jane pushed through into his early thirties at AB level.
CJ was so fun to watch and he was so good for a guy who wasn't the most physically gifted winger we've ever had. He had amazing vision, onfield intelligence and was brave as. And he had the best stiff arm fend in world rugby too
-
@canefan he was that player that was a 8.5 or 9 in nearly every category, with 10's or 11's in taking bombs and his fend!! Plus he was pretty amazing at using F-all space to create a gap or opportunity.
Wasn't it last minute try against the force or reds that got us into the playoffs one year?? where he had about a metre of field and made it look like a mile.

@Rancid-Schnitzel that was the try I thought @MN5 was referring too...
Boudjellal sounds like a bit of a fluffybunny though, guess when you rich, you behave like that and your little lapdogs still kiss your arse.
I'd say it's a bit of a performance. Sign up the former ABs for marketing/hype. If they play well, great that's a bonus. If not then kick up a public stink about how said player has let the club down etc. Deflect criticism away from himself, while still getting the initial marketing boost.

This article hits on a few points raised in this thread. Must be a coincidence.

Will be interesting with Beaudy like that - he is the magic 27 years old now and even the most ardent BB fan would have to admit if he loses his pace he doesn't have much else to fall back on at test level.I dunno about that. He's probably the "luckiest" player I've ever seen. The amount of times the bounce goes his way, he's in the perfect spot, to slip just the right pass. Going forward he's got fantastic vision.
-
Having had a quick look at some of the playing records from other notable international players at Toulon, it seems of the near 100 players only a handful have had an exceptional playing period at Toulon. Pretty harsh to single Savea out when others are possibly not performing to their expectations.

@Bones Goldie...
Nah, never seemed like that with Goldie.
In the dictionary under "Tin-arse" they must have a picture of Beauds.

Jane pushed through into his early thirties at AB level. In all those exceptions except for Mils I never really would have thought their speed or step comprised a big part of their game. Whereas Dagg and Cullen, while fullbacks, were never the same after they lost a gear and their step.

Even the most ardent opponent would have to admit that Barrett has done a hell of a lot more than run fast.

No doubt, but it is the straw that stirs the drink for him. As Bones points out his anticipation and support play is first class too, but without the pace to get there it doesn't really matter as much.
This isn't a slight on him Cullen did a hell of a lot more than run fast and step too, but once he lost a yard or two he very quickly wasn't AB material and at a less demanding position.

While I understand your sentiment we don't know if he was no longer AB material. He was still the best 15 in the 2003 S12 and then he got completely broken in Ireland. He may have developed along the lines of Blanco who was similar as a flair player in the first half of his career but then developed his game to be more steady while being in the right place at the right time.
I do think that much of Barrett's value comes from his flair and speed though, we all know he's not a traditional organising 10.

I note that the writer ensures that he avoids discussing Joe Rok, who may have dropped off the test roster as the other mentioned players did, but also continued a respected and valuable career in the NH.
Dropping from the extreme level required at the ABs (partly due to other options available) doesn't necessarily mean the skills have dropped for lesser levels.
Jules is likely an effective type of winger as long as there is a gameplan to put him in the right positions. -

@taniwharugby yeah it's crazy innit? Saw it with Rok, Jane, Nehe, Caleb - oh wait, hang on.
Caleb Ralph would be one of the few who still has the same speed.
He had deceptive pace - was slower than he looked.

He could even make it look like forwards could run him down.

Reminds me of Caleb Ralph getting run down by Chresten Davis in an NPC match some years back.
