I think Patty T may have played his last test in an AB jersey. He tends to lose the ball in contact too much. And as much as Ofa has improved, who else was nervous every time a scrum packed down in the 2nd half?
Not me, Ofa was huge out there. Franks is a big concern IMO, and was deservedly yanked after 45mins.
Patrick also had a good game, some big runs and good tight work. Dropped one ball.
I disagree.
I'm an Ofa T fan but a Pat T doubter.
But 2 attacking 5m scrums we got put under pressure and fluffed our moves. The kosh was on Ofa's side. He was up against a good scrummaging sub in Beast, though. Pat T not on the field at that time.
When Laulala is fit again, he will be on the bench. He is the best THP in NZ as far as scrummaging is concerned.
Can't agree. He is the heir apparent, but Owen did a good job on Kitshoff, whereas Nepo tends to be rock solid but less able to dominate.

Some utterly brainless shit cost us big time tonight.
BB's rubbish goal kicking was the losing of the game. Just not good enough. Problem is that it has been so obvious for so long but we keep getting told there is no issue. Criminal that there were two better kickers in the team going unused too.
The lack of droppie attempt at the end was a big concern too. That is the sort of bone headed play that results in embarrassing early exits from RWC's.
Im more pissed off about the nature of the loss than actually losing the game. This AB team looks great when things come off and we can run up big scores quickly but this game and the Lions series have exposed them a bit when they are under pressure late in a game. We are probably 2:2 in close finishes in the last two seasons.

From 2008-2015 we had quite a few close losses with some ‘brain dead’ play, but yet won two world cups. Go figure aye.

What I enjoyed (perversely) was that after second try Boks got their gander up and really put it to us. Shows that they have been well down on confidence.
Great for rugby to see Boks performing.
I can honestly say I'm glad that wasn't a 60-0 win, as WAATP Smith fretted about mid first half! -

Gotta say we missed Retallick big time.
Dunno...was a lot of ordinary and poor from a good number of players, BBBR is damn good the way we played I don't think we'd have won.
Too much rust out there, dumb decisions and pushing the play (almost sounds like after a northland game)

And we saw some pretty important goal/drop kicks go over to win us those world cups. Go figure.

@taniwharugby I do wonder if, with Barrett in place of Retallick, Squire has to play tighter. He wasn't very visible tonight.

He appeared to get injured early on a few times then went missing a bit.

It's weird that the All Blacks were so bad yet actually so good in much of what they did. Dominated the game and scored 6 tries. Any other team would have been savaged tonight. So we'll done to the Boks - if they can play like that every week they will be world number 2 soon. Yet they lost to the Aussies ... Very weird

And yet we didn’t see them very often if at all in the intervening years to pull out a victory in a close test. Go figure back at ya.

@unite Squire should have been subbed after the initial injury. I said this to my watching companion at the time.
He clearly wasn't right. You could see it in the driving maul try where the South African hooker scored and then on the second half kick off.
I was stunned that he took til 58 minutes to come off.
I do acknowledge that the player and the training staff have more knowledge of the injury than me, but I think the "warrior mentality" of the players hurts the team at times
-
@rapido really how does your mind work. In this game there was more penalties awarded in the 2nd half then in the 1st half and the telling thing is the ABs were not penalised in the 2nd half. That's persistent infringing and requires progressively harsher penalties. That is the whole point of penalties on rugby. Otherwise what's the point then if a team can concede p
5 consecutive penalties in their danger zone and don't get cards -

The loss we had to have. 😎
Although if only we went with
Moody, Taylor, Franks, Whitelock, Barrett, Taufua, Todd, Read, FABBH, Mo’unga, FABGB, Crotty, Goodhue, Tamanivalu, Havili
8 North Islanders and a Fijian poach.

Is it time to start DMac at 15 instead of JB if we're going to persist with BFA at 14? The supposed DMac is a headless chook and JB is solid is a myth and DMac actually had some decent test matches at 15 last year.
But, you can see that some posters still have DMac blinkers as he's getting some shit yet him and Goodhue added heaps when they came on (Goodhue more than DMac it must be said, he was on fire) and as @Mokey pointed out DMac was set for a drop goal for ages.
I think in the last 10 minutes, especially with the Boks down a man we overdid the ruck hit ups and should have spread wide, and I mean wide, not down the blind, earlier when defenders were being sucked in.
BB's general play outside his kicking was pretty average too, stupid kicks to the sideline and he was doing a weird hip pass thing to players with defenders on him.

He’s a deserved All Black and could fill a ‘void’ on the right wing

He's still a Fijian poach - I'm only being factual.
