I don't see why Read couldn't cover 7, with what we now expect from our openside.

Read has covered, and ended up playing at 7, before. He was much younger then of course!

It will be interesting to see if L Whitelock comes on to play 6 or 8.

Argie scrum will be weakened by Figallo being unavailable.

@majorrage And I GAF what you think of my spelling.

    And punctuation?

As Mark Richardson used to say no one likes a corrector.

As Mark Richardson meant, if he was smart enough to realise it - "nobody who always gets shit wrong likes a corrector".

Glade to hear that you get everything right in life. 😄

Fuck... spelling and punctuation are about the only things I get right in life - and not even them all the time. Hence the focus.
Also - glad to see irony, in all its forms, whether intentional or not.

Ian Foster explains why Mo'unga wasn't released for Mitre 10 Cup (video in article):

    Error 404

The more and more I hear Foster talk I think we are in good hands going forward after Shag.

    Ahhhhhhhhh!

Foster talked up a storm for the Chiefs too. He's a likeable man, who knows a lot about rugby.

What he couldn't do was sustain good performances in his teams. Something was wrong with the way he mentally prepared them. The Chiefs were fragile, even when winning.

Also he couldn't sack his favourites. Promising players who were promoted but didn't deliver (de Malmanche, say) were never dropped.

He's not a terrible coach, but we have better options.

Please don't compare those swamp rats from the Waikato to the AB environment thats like comparing a zephar to a procshe

    We're talking Chiefs, not Waikato.

The year after Foster left, the Chiefs team won the Super Rugby competition. So perhaps it wasn't the environment after all.

If Foster is head coach of the ABs, expect the same. Some good wins punctuated by inexplicable losses. Good stretches followed by terrible ones. I do not miss the Jon Mitchell or John Hart eras, and do not want it repeated. They both talked a good game too.

The quality of players will only ensure wins if the selector picks the best players in the first place, and motivates them correctly.

Didn't John Mitchell have quite a good strike rate for the AB's? Third best after Hansen and Ted?

He was kicked for being a grumpy twat, esp with the press, not poor coaching/results.

I don't believe his coaching didn't play a part in it, we folded like a cheap suit in a game we should have won. Plus, any fool could see he didn't have a plan of his own, he rolled out the 02 Crusaders game plan in his first year and the 03 Blues in his second.

@machpants He pissed off the sponsors big time, so that ensured his exit.

The All Blacks have had some magnificently surly coaches in their time. I still struggle to believe the real reason for his demotion was issues about that.

A couple of turns with a PR specialist, and a desire to do better could have got Cueball to the point where he was acceptable.

He's had the chop from a few teams now, and it hasn't been about PR.

It was as rugby was coming pro and money and sponsors were a pretty big part. Well taht's what the papers say nowadays anyway, I don;t really remember it.

I actually think the main reason he got tinned was the availability of Graham Henry.

The AB's played some seriously attractive rugby under Mitchell, gained back the Bled after a 5 year hiatus and put 50 points on both Aus / SA in consecutive weekends. We were then undone by an obsessive opposition coach who studied the shit out of us and worked out a gameplan to beat us in a knockout competition. The week after that, a slightly different game plan almost won a rugby world cup.

Not enough credit is given to Mitchell for what he achieved as coach of the AB's and also to Eddie Jones, for what he achieved with Australia in 2003.

Mitchell was dropped because he was a pain towards public, sponsors and his employers, and in the end a failure to achieve his main goal.

In retrospect was happy to see the back of him frankly. And I was a huge defender of him during his tenure. Just so divisive.

He's never really achieved much since. Or before when you think about it.

Did play against him. 94 3v4 club play off (Elimination Final?) for Putaruru v Fraser Tech and by fuck he was good. Pretty much the difference in the game. So quick in what he did.
