Arse throw from Harris
Where's Aumua?
Too early for that boy
-
@bones Right I think the Squire/Fifita experiment is over, Harris, Whitelock L are not AB quality.
Others have been put on notice - Crotty, TJ,P Ardie and even Scott Barrett all need to wkae themselves up. Fifita. Crotty and Squire seem to spend most of their time down injured anyway. And BFA just looks... well, OLD.
We have Read, BBBR, SBW still to return and maybe an injection of new blood from the saviour Frizell (I jest) and Aumua (Taylor was in his infancy at RWC 2015) will help,
Seriously though, we need more GRAFTERS, workhorses and unsung heroes prepared to roll their sleeves up and do the dirty work, We seem to have too many faffing around *Ardies I'm looking at you) ready to grab glory rather than getting in amongst it. -

Aumua has been injured otherwise there is little doubt he would be in the squad.

I reckon there is huge doubt over him at this stage. He may have been selected but i think it would’ve been highly likely he wouldn’t play.

Moriarty's actions this morning should still be a straight red.
Wrong thread I know, but Moriaty's behaviour was utterly bizarre. It was so bad it was almost comical. Def a Red and probbly a few weeks ban.

@MiketheSnow Fall could have avoided the collision by checking his run. The current laws have actually outlawed "only having eyes on the ball". They've mandated that players must be more aware when chasing high balls. And that's what he was doing - chasing, whereas Beauden was fielding the kick. The duty of care is on the chaser.
They did that to stop players clattering into their opposition while staring at the sky and then claiming innocence.
I don't for a second believe Fall intentionally tried to injure Beauden. But as it stands Beauden landed on his head and was concussed.
And you can bet your ass next time Fall is chasing a high ball like that he will check his run and avoid the collision, which is exactly the behaviour WR is trying to encourage with this.
Fair enough.
Best explanation yet.
No argument from me after that.

This morning's press conference.
Especially interesting from 4'36'', particularly what Hansen says about asking players, who have just come back from injury, to "double up". They don't have many options from props, but other options like Sam Cane's, there they have options.
I think Matt Todd may get a run on Saturday ...
Further about two players contesting for the ball (the red card situation), and briefly about next week's selection (from 13'25").

Forgive me for intimating we might take a leaf out of AFL books, but surely those crazies have a rule to reduce the carnage which might otherwise result from their marking antics?
Like thou shalt not tackle below the waist?
-
@taniwharugby Hansen basically echoed all my thoughts - including my scenario of the same team players taking out each other and the fact that the outcome shouldn't determine the sanction of the action.
Since we're so in sync (Tongan Frizell aside) he might take my selectorial advice for next weekend.
-
From my armchair view Cane looked spent early in the test. Not sure what the deal is, but he looked noticeably off the pace.
Squire was pretty good last week and put in the grunt work, but we are going to have to live with some inconsistency given the lack of experience. Look at the loosies in previous years that had up and down form - Vito, Thomson, Luatua, Messam (before he became a starter)

Now rewatched first half, where ABs weren't too bad. Four takeaways:
-
In early play ABs were leaving a big gap about two out from rucks. French really excellent at exploiting that. One try that ought to have been scored and another dangerous break by Bellau;
-
Moody/Barrett (S) combo seemed off. It seemed that in second and third scrums power from Barrett not coming through well. After missed try the LH hit was poor and scrum struggling from there. Next scrum Moody won the hit, but power seemed to stutter and his knee went to ground, after which French scrum mullered us;
-
DMac was hopeless when we got scrums close to French line. Instead of manipulating things to exploit extra man he tried to do too much. But in broken play his ability to find space is superb;
-
French made maybe four turnovers, at least three close to flanks. Abs guilty of mot having support players clean out after e.g. Taylor went to ground. Sloppy.
-
-
@pakman Moody is worrying. What has happened to his form? In general play he's nearly as bad as Franks.
TBH, it's worrying how bad Franks has got in general play, he's never been great but now he's terrible, he's just there for scrummaging now.
It will be interesting to see how much our pack transforms when BBBR is back though.
-
@nepia if it's anything like he's been playing for the Chiefs this year then I don't think Retallick will add too much. His form has been well below his best and he's caught the penalty bug too.

Seriously, WTF have you been smoking in the ACT or Canterbury this year? He's singlehandedly kept the Chiefs in games and without him (and Cane) they wouldn't be in spitting distance of making the finals.

I can only conclude you know absolutely nothing about rugby.
-
There was very little to be gained by the ABs practicing against a short backline.
We gained more by pretending there wasn't an overlap and playing our normal game. So DMac wasn't necessarily wrong to do what he would normally do.
We need to work out how to beat rush defences, not how to trash sides short a man.

Now watched second. Third quarter OK, but fourth abysmal. On the above:
-
Some gaps still close to ruck, and which French worked by passing back close in; and
-
Moody's knee on ground again at first scrum and replaced. Hard to judge Karl T, as French props swapped out after his first scrum. But replacement AB front row right on top of replacement French one.
Thought ALB was very collected and played well. I'd have subbed Crotty instead of him.
I thought Ardie was quite good.
