@catogrande I get that, plus the tenous link with Xanadu - Jeff Lynne dooing the BV/s on the original, but Mr Bluesky after the atrocious weather in Britain lately? Why not "Wild West Hero"
-
Ha! Yeah not the best choice. Evil woman perhaps?

@booboo Doesn't explain why Mes is in the team though. A GS who can't shoot? That is insane. Folau deserves credit considering every quarter she and Mes were on, she had to carry the entire load. I mean Mes wasn't netting from anywhere, and that is unforgivable. A GA's job is to link between the midcourt and circle, to feed the ball to the GS and to be a back up for rebounds. They should never be asked to do all that PLUS shoot all the goals.
Mes has been dire but she fully deserved to be in the team. Apart from Catherine (was Latu can't remember her married name) she was the top Kiwi shooter in last years ANZ Premiership shooting close to 90% from memory and putting up plenty of shots as well.
On domestic form Selby-Rickett was the bolter.
It wasn't just a one-off either Mes has been a very consistent shooter for a few years now but clearly her confidence is (ahem) shot. Mentally she's just gone. Doesn't have the confidence to put up a shot unless she's right under the posts - and then more often than not she misses.
Something is clearly really rotten in that team and for Southby not to have fallen on her sword already is piss poor

Broadcasters from Australia's Channel 7 and the Australian minister overseeing the Commonwealth Games say they agree with fans who said the closing ceremony was disappointing with very little celebration of the athletes themselves.
Zempilas agreed, saying "Unfortunately tonight, the hosts, the organising committee, together with the host broadcasters, just didn't get it right". "It was a mistake not to include the athletes coming out into the stadium ... so we were not able to bring you any pictures because we did not have any pictures available to us ... it's a disappointing conclusion.
"To be brutally honest, most of the athletes left during the ceremony. "And the speeches - look, we understand the dignitaries need to get their messages out there ... but they were way too long tonight, way too long and, dare I say it, a little self-indulgent".

Black Sticks women's captain Stacey Michelsen will be the flagbearer for the closing ceremony.
That was the first time I've watched a hockey game since the Olympics.
In my limited knowledge she seemed a class above. Great control, dribbling etc. felt confident each time she was on the ball that something might happen.
Well done, her. Proud moment to carry the flag.
As a general observation, the way the black sticks were playing reminded me of a football high press.

Great kits.
Watching on mute, but can instantly tell what country the athletes are from.
The worse thing that has happened to sport kits design was when they figured out how to economically viably mass
produce material with blur/merge/faded colours. -

It was REALLY obvious on the sidelines when Southby was crouched in front of several players, talking to them. They weren't even looking at her. Everything about the players body language was screaming fuck off.

@chris-b i didn't watch it, but there is a heap of media slating the fuck out of it this morning. Looks like most people left halfway through, and as far as the broadcasters were concerned, the athletes barely mattered.
So the athletes never even entered the stadium with their flag bearers? That's an epic balls up by the organisers. We watched until it got to the speeches then fell asleep as it was just self indulgent bullshit that went on and on and on and on...

@rocky-rockbottom That would be the Empire Games. Commonwealth would be Ghandi sitting marathons, NZ 'cap in hand don't leave us Mother' pleading comps, etc
The 100 metre military coup.
Fiercely fought for event amongst members; Fiji, Pakistan, and various African states etc.

Ouch, no guessing who’s at the bottom of the list

Another of Peter Beattie's monumental fuckups.

To answer my own question, the athletes entered the stadium before the TV coverage started. They did it so they didn't leave them waiting outside for too long.
So they only part of the ceremony that people might have been interested in happened before it even started.

Well here in the UK they are still delirious about their netty girls - and why wouldn't they be. Contrasting fortunes for the 2 coaches eh, the England coach has been celebrated as something of an underdog hero, and then there's Southby.....if she doesn't fall on her sword of her own volition, she should be forced to go. However there probably needs to be a complete overhaul of systems and structures, including re=looking at the resumption of some sort of trans-tasman comp.
For mine, apart from the twin golds in the sevens, and the somewhat surprising but very welcome success in the hockey, I enjoyed the return to form of some of our more tradtionally successful sports - weightlifting, hammer, shot put, pole vault, boxing, squash and really enjoyed watching relatively newer sports like mountainbiking, beach volleyball and mixed triathlon. More funding for these sports please!

Those rankings look reasonably fair - one O'Dea bro several places higher than the other.
I saw Tayla Ford wrestle an Indian woman for the bronze medal. The woman had won Olympic bronze and Ford almost beat her (lost 6-5 if I recall correctly - almost got an early pin down win and finished stronger). I'd rank her a bit higher.

Stupid that a non gold medal winning cyclist is rated above gold medal winners.
The All Whites got a Halberg for a series of draws. The quality of the competition has to play a part in the significance of the achievement.
