Hurricanes 2018

Just came back from the Hurricanes Dev game. The Hurricanes beat Blues "A" convincingly, 40 to 19.
The Canes dominated most of the game, and had most possession and territory, except for the last 15 minutes of the first half. Although they gave away a lot of unnecessary penalties, they were clearly the better team, both on attack and defence. One big exception was the scrum, where the Blues had the upperhand.
Not going to write a whole report and name a lot of names, because I forgot my glasses and couldn't always see who was who, nor did I recognise all players (and not every number on the jersey corresponded to the name on the team list), but stand-outs for me were whoever was playing in the Canes no. 5 jersey (it wasn't Michael Fatialofa), Ihaia West, Reed Prinsep, Du'Plessis Kirifi and Tiatia for the Canes. JTA was very vocal and really took a leadership role. He played about 25 minutes. Aumua, I think, only played the first half (it was hard to tell with the rolling subs). Both Canes halfbacks played well; I like the ginger combo of Booth and West.
I recognised fewer Blues players, but Leger was busy but couldn't quite get his job done and Clarke didn't get the ball enough to make any impression. I think Pryor played only the first half for the Blues and was very keen to get his hands on the ball. Moulds and Matich played about 60 minutes. Trainor was meh.
Worst news, especially for us Bay fans, was that Jonah Lowe left the field injured after about half an hour. He sat the rest of the game, including the break, on the bench and the team doc was busy with his foot (or ankle?) for at least 15-20 minutes. After the game he was wearing a moonboot. I hope it's not a broken foot again.
Canes 40 (tries to Tiatia?, JGB (all work done by the outside backs though), a back?, West, Judd and Proctor??; conversions West 4x)
Blues 19 (tries to 4 or 6, ?? and one quick back (not Trainor or Gregory) - that was an intercept try in the 80th minute; conversions Plummer 2x)

I'm sure the Canes or Blues will come up with a better report of the game.

I don't think he's a serious contender for the ABs at the moment but he is playing well
His form turned around way back in the 2015 NPC. Then he looked extremely good for the Blues dev team in early 2016 (combined really well with Ioane who was playing 13).
I was expecting him to have a big impact on SR that year.. Unfortunately that's the game when he got the injury that kept him out for a year.It's a shame Umaga let him go in 2017 and opted for Declan O'Donnell over him. Declan wasn't up to standard and now the Hurricanes have the benefit of a fully fit Lam

I can confirm Jackson Garden-Bachop managed to make the Northern United club's 1st XV for their match played against Wellington at Porirua Park tonight. He ended up being relieved of the goalkicking duties after missing four from six, including one from almost in front about 25 metres out. Food for thought for those that are pushing for his inclusion in the Hurricanes matchday 23?

If he keeps this form up he will be. Perhaps not a starter but definitely in the squad unless teams can expose skill gaps. He looks like a genuine power winger with pace.

.HURRICANES DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME PRAISED
The Hurricanes Development programme continues to show its worth in helping the club prepare for its Investec Super Rugby schedule. Tonight’s curtain raiser against the Chiefs Development side will be the side’s fourth match this season having already lined up against the Crusaders Knights, the Blues Development and a New Zealand Under-20 selection. Hurricanes Development coach and regional development manager Darren Larsen said the importance of the programme could not be under-stated. Larsen highlighted the fact that several players who had already been part of the development side in 2018 would be starting or were on the bench for the Hurricanes when they line up against the Sharks at McLean Park. “If you look at a guy like Sam Henwood, he’s played some big minutes for us, played really well and now he’s starting for the second time in a row for the Hurricanes,” he said. “You then look at a guy like Jeff Toomaga-Allen who has been in the development side as he came back from injury and the likes of Ihaia West and Reed Prinsep who have got some valuable time at a really good level to keep their form where it needs to be.” Larsen said the development side’s matches were also an excellent opportunity for the likes of New Zealand Under-20 squad members Devan Flanders, Carlos Price, Billy Proctor and Pasi Uluilakepa to really test themselves before their national commitments. As well as those key points, provincial union’s within the Hurricanes club were also using the programme to put forward players they want to see play at a higher level, including Hawke’s Bay outside back JJ Tualangi who would come off the bench at McLean Park. As for tonight’s opposition, Larsen was expecting the Chiefs to be very similar in the way the play. “They have also got a good nucleus of New Zealand Under-20 players who will want to play as hard as our guys,” he added.JJ Taulagi - they misspelled his name twice, so it's not a typo - on the bench. New Magpies signing. Has only played 2 club games in the Bay thus far.
Jonah Lowe must indeed be injured.
