Hmmm. We have very high expectations and every loss is like a knife to the heart. The very thought of not being best hurts like hell. I don't know if that is arrogance or just a pathological fear of being 2nd best.

That certainly seems to equate with rugby but conversely you all appear to cope with not being No1 in say cricket. I really think it is a lot to do with the place rugby has in NZ.

Well we are talking about rugby here aren't we 🙂

Ah! That makes sense now. You lot are only arrogant in relation to rugby. Thank God, this means us Poms are still the most arrogant. Glad that's cleared up. 😁

@Catogrande or rugby is held that high because we are no.1

Could be but we don't get like that with croquet 😁

Someone else on here somewhere has mentioned a doco called (I think) Beyond the Black. Was a pretty good watch and tried to explain the place rugby has in NZ.

One thing that doco tried to explain to an overseas audience was how Haka has become a big part of both our rugby culture and our national identity. Explained it in context.
I know this is all a bit of recent history when viewed alongside an old world country but it does annoy me a bit to hear the pre-game referred to over here as 'song and dance' when those times have long gone.

This touches on the point I was about to make.

We are only satisfied when the ABs win (and sometimes we even complain about that). Our pass level is very high.
A bit of the tone I am seeing in the UK is that we don't give enough credit to the BIL. That is probably true but we only give credit to our own team when they play really well. I have yet to see the BIL play really well except for a short period against a second/third string Chiefs.
Yes we are hard judges but we apply it to our own as well.

On the flip side, if the BIL were to lose a close game this weekend they would still probably get lauded in the UK for showing us that the NH style can compete.

Gotta win before we hand out the plaudits

Great point. People here hyperventilate when we only beat Japan or Namibia by 50. Players who would be stars anywhere else are often referred to as shit. When we are so ridiculously tough on our own, we're hardly going to readily hand out compliments to dirty foreigners.

Not necessary. Both terms are tautologies.

    Well, regarding the rugby anyway.

I wouldn't say arrogant, just more overly invested in that national teams performance than your average UK fan who maybe cares about the club game or another sport more.

There was a period in the late 90's and early 00's where the performances didn't match the nations...uh... 'optimism' and maybe there were a few fans (and management?) living off the mysticism of the black jersey and our track record than what was happening at the time? That was the only time I've seen it - living in Sydney going to Bledisloes around period.

I love this thread. Name me one NZ poster on this forum who doesn't think we are the best at rugby and I'll show a liar.

I was having a conversation today with my Welsh colleague and realized I am totally arrogant. I'm happy to own it. I was like, well 'Y'know Murray is probably the best HB running around.. you probably have a lot of players I'd have in my AB team'

but actually there aren't reeaalllllllly that many. I don't even think Murray would start for my AB team.

I'm happy to accept that makes me a condescending asshole.

That's not to say that the BIL aren't better than the ABs by the way, just that I'll never live in a world where I'll accept that any team, ever, is better than the MIB. Even if we get slapped 0-3.

About rugby supporters, a few people are arrogant because that is their personality and there are knobs in every country. Unfortunately, when you have a theory you look for evidence to support what you think. Call it motivated reasoning, cognitive dissonance, whatever, you can always find evidence that reinforces your thinking and block out the rest of the evidence to the contrary. Most rugby supporters are bloody nice people. You only remember the knobs when calling out theories.
The media...well....I don't know what to say....let's just enjoy the stupidity in the build up to Saturdays game!

I'd like to think that the vast majority of Welsh, Irish and Scottish supporters understand that beating NZ is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Of the Home Nations, England have gone best against NZ and they genuinely feel that they can beat NZ when they face them. They don't beat NZ often. Does that make the English arrogant?

NZ are so far ahead of the pack that the expectation is that 9 times out of 10 they will win.

If an NZ supporter expresses that, it doesn't make them arrogant in my eyes.

    Show offs maybe 😉

Kiwi rugby supporters ARE arrogant, no denying it. A century of results (mostly winning) leads to certain expectations. And generational accusations by opponent supporters about All Black "thuggery" and "dark arts" and only being the best "between World Cups" and "raping/pillaging/poaching" the islands and "haka advantages" and "Richie is a cheat" only galvanizes the supporter base into righteous indignation and even MORE arrogance. Oh well sucks to be us I suppose.

    Good call.

New Zealand completely arrogant about rugby.
England completely arrogant about everything else.

Everyone else just whingers and moaners who don't know how to play tiddlywinks or man up.

Glad that issue is cleared up.

I get the whole "holding the team to a higher standard" thing, but that doesn't necessarily need to translate into being stinting in praise of others, even if their efforts are relatively uninspiring by comparison. For instance, when my kids were little, their Lego efforts were crap compared to mine, but I praised them enough to keep them trying. My wife can't serve for shit, but I tell her that a fair proportion of the double faults are unlucky (or maybe even "in", if I'm on a promise). If you're just going to tell the unadorned truth all the time you might as well be Dutch. And celibate.

Yeah - I had that problem with my boyfriend not being good at serving.

I stopped telling him after I got baked beans for breakfast three times in a row....
