A lot of assumptions being made that this is a religious based stand. My first thought was that he has a personal sponsorship clash that hasn't finished yet.
It can't be that, you'd never get a team or competition sponsor if snowflakes could opt out with their own sponsors.
Nothing worse than born again types.
According to the media, SBW has a special clause in his contract with NZR. If that's true, it's not a matter of people randomly opting out.
I don't think just SBW has an objection clause in his contract. Everyone does, it's just that he has apparently used it.
I don't know his reasoning and personally don't hold with any views based on mythical deities but I do support the right for people to follow a faith if they wish.
Wasn't there something years back with Kronfeld or Anton Oliver covering a logo up? Or was that adding a political logo?
How much different is this from say, refusing to tour SA in apartheid days because of personal beliefs?
Or Michael Jones or Steve Pokere not playing on Sundays? -

I would be skitzing if I was BNZ. (Unless they were told that certain individuals could do that when they signed on)
Haven't seen much reaction (been on holiday) ... but BNZ have had 'uuuge publicity from this.
Good work SB!

@Hooroo although ironically, it probably gives them more exposure because he put tape over it
This. As mentioned above.

Kronfeld painted his headgear with nuclear free symbols before we played the French - back in the late 90's I think.
As we went into professionalism, there were a few people (Jonah partiuclarly I think) who had individual sponsors who were not team sponsors. Meant some players were wearing Nike shoes, while the team was Adidas (or equivalent). That expression of freedom didn't last long

I doubt that concerns him. If this is what it is then its not about denying promotion to someone, its about being true to your own beliefs.
The fact that the NZRU have a clause regarding conscientious objection means they allow it and sponsors would also be aware of it. Also means they recognise that commercial agreements should not be forced on others, good on them.
I don't see that it's a big issue. If I worked for a company that got involved with another I didn't agree with morally (eg a tobacco company) I would ask to not be involved and hope that was possible. If not I'd have to decide what took precedence for me, my job or my personal integrity. He's very lucky he works for an enlightened company. -
Edit - @Crucial I'm not fussed about the contract side of things, but I do think he's a massive tool. Given the blatant hypocrisy it's obvious the tape was just a "look at me and my morally superior religious beliefs! I won't support a big evil bank!". Lame, and I would not be bothered if he doesn't wear black again given the "no dickheads" policy.

That's the thing. Apparently his moral conscience had no problem with the logo for his profile pic or at training or when talking to the media. No, it just magically asserted itself in his first game back. What an incredible coincidence.
I say dump this prick. The ABs don't need him and neither does NZ rugby.

He's not McCaw or Carter or even Nonu and Smith. My point exactly.

SBW really puts sand in your vaginas doesn't he?

If you wander over to various Off-Topic threads you'll notice that religion, and in particular Islam puts large quantities of sand in my vagina on a daily basis. SBW's tape triggered me.

Name another Super rugby player that's done this. I have sand and vag at the ready.

You said it Bill. I'll tell ya, with this comment and his awesome food pic on social media he might well be my favourite NZ PM ever.
At the end of last year he also said "I wouldn't describe myself as a feminist. I don't quite know what that means,".
He's ticking all the boxes at this point.

I reckon SBW has done the BNZ a big favour. Who would have noticed their little logo on the collar otherwise?
Now they've got a whole lot of free publicity.
I'd seen a headline of this, assumed I had the gist of the story, before I watched the match (highlights).
I couldn't even find the bnz logo on anyone.
I then became very confused.
So, on the collar .....
32 inches just ain't big enough, obviously. Must get bigger telly.

You might want to speak to the sponsor first who are clearly smart enough that this furore has provided them with an amount of free advertising they couldn't have hoped for. Arguably on a level that their actual sponsorship wasn't going to provide.

Something that has been mentioned numerous times already.
Makes SBW's "moral stand" even more ridiculous.
