The weirdest thing with ALB is he wasn't really in the frame until injuries struck. They were still really keen on Seta and Fekitoa.
Can't really remember the last All Black who snuck in on the back of injuries and then turned out to be what we are looking for? Maybe Brad Thorn when he came back?
Might be wrong, but I think when Jane was initially selected to start on the wing , we were a few options down with injury at the time , he may have got there in the end anyway

Just watching replay. At 27th minute Beast cleans out Whitelock and then pins him down about a metre from the ruck. Beast is deliberately placing his entire weight and knee on Whitelock. Now if Whitelock reacts to that he gets a yellow, but Beast gets nothing for deliberately holding a player down and taking him out of the game.
This is probably something all sides do and it should be cracked down on imho.
The Bok 13 kick and chase vs BB was hilarious.
How the fark was that TJP try awarded?

Caught up with what I watched this morning. That Barrett pass that led to the TJP try was ridiculous. Drew 3 players.
Even when having an "off" game he craps on every other 10 in the game. His skillset is absurd.
Surely Retallick has to be player of the year. He is a straight out phenom.

ALB has been a surprising revelation. Always thought he'd hold his own for a wee while and then we'd see (like Crotty and Feki) but, by christ the young lad has learned his stuff well and looks a natural in black. Well done son!
TJ adds some good physicality and is mostly pretty good - passing was suss last night though

As for the other calls...ditto. he does make some very good calls (ala young Gardiner who must have been working a shift at KFC drivethrough and thus unavailable I guess) for example the Faf deliberate knock on, Moody's lazy non retreat from an infield bomb and I guess most games flow under him, but jesus wept we must see the game differently. Slowing down rucks, contesting while being prone over ruck bodies, obstructing after the ruck, Brodie's tackle and get up, TJ's try (fuck off the TMO gets to make the final call eh Wayne?), Brodie's try, Lima's try are just examples of how he does his job

I feel real empathy for my Saffa mates - good honest rugby men and women- who have had this dross forced upon them. I loved watching that game live, had great fun cackling and oohing with glee during the early hours of the morning.

Strange game, man the Boks were limp. Just offered nothing, kicked all their ball away and were fairly passive in defense for the majority of the game. How did they beat the Wallabies last week? Having said that the fall of both these teams has been monumental. Crazy to think the AB's have room to improve and settle.
As others have said ALB was awesome. Exactly what we need from our midfield. Someone who can bend the line and break a tackle/take a gap but is awesome at giving it to his support when that is the best option. Some great "SBW" offloads too. Come Lions time we are going to have 6-7 options for that midfield.
BB's kicking was shit but he had a decent game otherwise. Some great running and passing.

I'd say the player of the year is Barrett. Awesome through Super rugby as well.
If you include SR then no question. There aren't enough superlatives to describe his SR season. The highlight reel in youtube is a thing of beauty.

@jegga It was, believe it or not, a seven point ballgame at 22-15 at the three quarter mark (reviewing a highlights package - TJP scored a try about eight seconds later). Then fuck me, it turned into a seven times tables test at school.
Credit to Nisbett and Goldie, even they knew the scoreline was flattering to the Boks at that point.

We can be behind in the first half , and normally I would be starting to sit on the edge of my seat
but there is this almost arrogant confidence right now , knowing our opposition cant go the 80 with us ,
to feel that way playing the Boks over there , almost feels a bit surreal

A Smith is still the king
At the time I assumed a Bok had got a sly hand or foot somewhere to turn those passes into grubbed along the ground.
But up until about 3 months ago I had TJP rated as the worst AB I'd seen, so not beyond the realms of possibility that he can still throw the odd shocker.
Fair to say I do actually rate him now.

A Smith is still the king
They are quite different players with their own strengths and weaknesses.
The past two tests have actually suited TJP. He's had to put in a heap of tackles and there's been a lot of stuff happening at the ruck that TJ's size has actually been an advantage.
If Smith comes back next test, great. But if TJP starts again, that will be great too.

There have been a few times but the one that really sticks out was the ABs team built around the great Auckland shield team of the late 80s. When Buck fronted for the Haka you knew it was over, just a question of how much. And Fox was the best NZ goalkicker I can remember. He never seemed to miss

I'm not sure if it has been mentioned previously but BBs goal kicking style seems to have been adjusted (mostly for good, but it came unstuck in the wind).
Watch most kickers and they way 'over kick' what is necessary. That's because they want one procedure and standard irrespective of distance and angle and conditions. How many times do you see close kicks sail way up high and into the stands when a simple prod could have done the job? Also why you sometimes see what look like easy kick skew away because they are kicked hard but not perfectly.
They key is that that kicking movement must be perfect or the risk of missing increases (yes, stating the obvious). What I have noticed with BB is that he recently started just stroking the ball through quite low and with only enough force as was necessary. This worked for a while to combat his inconsistencies but last night the wind played havoc with this approach as there wasn't enough weight behind the ball.
He isn't a poor kicker, just needs to either work on picking the style for the moment or finding that one style that works for him at a high percentage.
