i love maverick but i feel it was far from walking a line, if anything it wadded full on over the line, rather than a nod to the original...straight up replicated scenes, the beach, playing the piano, etc
And yet unlike SW it was lauded
Yeah - it just worked. That's what I mean by walking the line - it was straight up constant references/scenes-from the original - but it somehow didn't feel derivative, or "look how clever we are with this nod/wink", or any of those traps. It just worked. Shoehorn in a ridiculous plot so that we get to see an F-14 - sure, fuck it - why not. Not even going to question it - because now I get to see Tom Cruise in an F-14 against fucking "5th Generation fighters", and I love how ridiculous it is.
The perfect reboot to make people feel good again, like they did in the 80s.
Criminally low titwatch, however, considering my teenage crush Jennifer Connelly was in it.
She needs to stop running.

Roger Ebert: "...it’s disappointing how often Alvarez and company felt like they had to go back to what could be called fan service with lines and easter eggs that feel overly calculated for our referential culture of late."
is Ebert reviewing movies in the afterlife?

Good point - I did have a hint of "huh?" - but didn't follow the thought through.

Indeed, I much prefer that…..
….to this
Not saying she’s not still hot, but that younger version was sensational
Two big reasons for that
-
absolutely unreal in Blood Diamond
but i've loved her since Labyrinth so i am glad she's beneath all you adonis's

I find the Jennifer Connelly discussions on here hilarious, she's in her bloody 50s, of course she's not going to have the puppy fat and associated boobies.
> Just watch Inventing the Abbots.
And yeah yeah stating the obvious.
I remember the flatties were watching that and a bunch of us came home during JCs scene. Naturally we sat down and watched the rest but she was barely in it. Her tits weren’t in it again at all.
Really stink
I don’t know or care who the Abbots were or what they invented but those bombs fucken rocked.

Yep - that was maybe my first pre-teen stirrings of "I'd crawl over broken glass for that" - without knowing what I'd do once I got there.

Anora
Best of the three I’ve seen. By a mile
One minute Woody Allen farce, the next the intensity of Uncut Gems - exhausting, frustrating, can’t look awayI think I agree with this.
For a lot of this movie I really didn't know if I was liking it or not. I'm not big on strip clubs/strip club movies, I'm not morally against them in general but not my scene so the opening was a bit iffy to me.
But the farce part had me in stitches which got me on board.
On the intensity:
I think they did well with Igor, I didn't know whether he was going to kill her or if he was starting to like her.At times I found Anora so annoying and at other times I really liked her character.
I found it a little bit weird that the actor playing Igor was the one they chose to put forward for nominations as I thought Vanya was really good as well. Maybe they consider him the lead?

The Brutalist/September 5: So I bought a ticket for The Brutalist, it started, within a few minutes I knew I couldn't sit through Brody in one sitting, so I got up and went to the next cinema over and saw September 5 about the Munich Olympics hostage situation. Good move about the sports news team for ABC who did most of the live reporting as they were set up closest to where everything took place. Was interesting to see all the manual ways they used to do things, for example the onscreen graphics which were done with plastic letters and then filmed and then superimposed in the shot. Was also interesting to see how un prepared the police were for the situation.
It got a script nomination so I think I can justify watching it as part of my Oscars watch. I think I'll have to download The Brutalist and watch it like it's a Zac Snyder film in lots of small parts.

Amores perros
It’s a hard-ish watch but well made. One of those films you stumble across in the tv listings and decide to record.

@Nepia I read that The Brutalist has an intermission. Just for you!
I reckon I'll need one every 20 minutes, that's my Brody tolerance.
That’s actually quite impressive

The 355
Writing this as I watch... not sure how this experiment will go...- Hot mess, right from the start
- 1 minute in... Most Blatant MacGuffin Ever - "this is our plot"
- Every single fucking scene - just a remake of other shit, blatant, but slapped together with fuck-all understanding of how this jigsaw works
- None of it makes any fucking sense - none of the motivations, conflicts... nothing
- Penelope Cruz walks in, out of nowhere, WTF? , but not gonna complain
- Somebody doesn't understand the difference between "south-east" vs "south-west"
- Somebody doesn't understand how basic cellphone security works
- An ensemble cast comprising of a hot: blonde, redhead, latina, black (no love for the asian).... and zero tit-watch
- Shit- maybe they've now thrown in asian chick as an antagonist? Ah no, now she's joined the crew. Some idiot script-writer is very happy with themselves.
Pretty super-dumb fun despite all that.- I would love to collate the ridiculous quotes from this, but... can't be arsed. WAY too much work.
This shit is so derivative - I'm genuinely constantly wondering if I've actually already seen it, but maybe under-the-influence the first time.
FullTime-Edit: I genuinely only realised at the 90% mark that this was supposed to be a "women-empowerment" type thing. Coz I don't really care about that - somebody makes an action movie with female star(s) - cool, don't care - will watch. But THIS - did a little cringe. Then they did the ridiculously overt bit at the very end ... FFS.
