With the benefit of time to cool down, that loss feels less about the quality of the side and more about execution on the day. Having Hay keeping wicket or Young opening probably doesn't change the result - Philips and Latham dropped most of the catches.

If we catch better, they're 70/5 trailing by 280 with one more wicket exposing the tail. Totally different game, and probably one we win easily.

I agree with dropping Blundell, pushing Phillips up to 6 and bringing in Young. Not as convinced on bringing in Santner.. I think Phillips is ready to be the frontline spinner, with Rachis providing some part time overs. Stead's conservatism frustrates me, both in terms of selection and in terms of how we're using the players we do select.

Anyway, I'm quietly confident going into the basin, but maybe we've just given their top order a chance to get into form anh confident and will get blown away, but I feel like a small improved in catching (for all the drops, none of them were really tough chances, so a small improvement would see most if not all of them caught) and I think we're ahead.

Our chances in the WTC were basically cooked already, but we in theory had a path if other results went our way, but that's gone now.

I thought we were a chance if we won 2-1, is that not the case ?

Damn, the Blacks Caps suffer from the same issue as the All Blacks, our best selector is player injuries.

Huh, you're right. We can even finish top of the table still if we win 2-1 and everything else falls our way.

Yeah we are still a chance for the big dance.

If you want to waste even more time of your employer’s, a decent little predictor to play around with….

    Andrew Purcell

    World Test Championship Predictor

    World Test Championship Predictor

You predict who makes the World Test Championship Final

Damn, now we need to win both our games and rely on results going our way.

Not sure what it will take to get the teams to speed up the over rates, but the penalty is thoroughly deserved by both teams.

Australia missed out on the final we won because of over rates. That was sweet.

That sums up the Black Caps a run of being Crap caps, then a patch of playing way above expectations then back down to earth.

Yes, could pick it up at the second letter of the Welsh town rather than the 6th. That would be good.

So who do we need to win in the Aus V Ind series to give us the best chance of making the WTC final? That is a very different question to who we would like to play in the final of course.

I was playing with the WTC predictor the other and the best outcome for us would be four draws between Aus and Ind. Somehow I imagine that is super unlikely to happen.

Yeah. India couldn't even make a match last 5 days against us, and they just walloped Australia who must be even worse!

(That gloating feels so damned hollow after last week but what the hell).

I saw Latham come out and say the catching is not an issue, that you just sometimes have bad days etc, which I hope was just something he was saying to deflect the media while at the same time he had the boys in the field every day practicing basic catching over and over.

And given this article, I hope to God that is the case as we are the worst fielding side in the world bar Bangladesh at the moment which is both costly and embarrassing.

Those sort of stats point to either can not concentrate to a test level standard.Or lack of repetitive practice to make catching 2nd nature.
    Pathetic in either case.

    Zero surprises...

"We won't go about doing more catching because of the result that happened. We'll make sure we prepare the way we do, it's something we pride ourselves on, and we'll tick those boxes ...and we will be ready to go for this test match.''

Mitchell said he was unaware of statistics compiled by the cricket.com website that show New Zealand's catching rate in tests this year is the worst of test playing nations bar Bangladesh.

Black Caps out to reverse catching woes in Basin Reserve test

Black Cap Daryl Mitchell says he has faith they will reverse their catching woes and ''take some screamers'' in the second test against England in Wellington.

Mitchell also misses another point. In the case of the first Test, it's less about having to take "screamers", and more about "not dropping more straightforward chances".
