Hmmm. I'm a bit indifferent on this. I haven't had a chance to read about it but if the case is that 10,000 dogs die a year, so fucking what? Count how many dairy cows are culled each year due to performance issues.

Yeah I suppose the argument is the animals in farming serve a broader purpose for humanity - we consume them or their produce.

Greyhound racing is, more or less, for shits and giggles when you break it all down. The dogs are just disposable, and it's not like they bring any broad benefits to society like farm animals do.
-
Hmmm shouldn't they be given a chance to reform the sport rather than just banning it? Seems a bit extreme. Now what's going to happen to these dogs bred for racing? Thousands will be put down won't they?

They have been given the chance, Rancid. More than once. But the enquiry found that they continued to ignore the abuse present in the industry, and actively cover it up.

The big question is about the dogs, I agree. Hopefully they can do a big push for pet adoption, though I imagine a lot would be sold/moved to race in other states.
-

It just seems incredibly draconian to ban an entire industry when the majority aren't doing anything wrong. -

They've had decades to clean up their act and as an industry they've colluded, obfuscated and turned a blind eye to issues they've known about for decades. Their hubris is demonstrated perfectly by the interview I was listening to on 666 ABC this morning with the CEO of Richmond Race Club who honestly thought they'd just get rapped over the knuckles in the report. Fuck 'em.

I'll put a plug in for the Greyhounds as pets group in NZ: http://greyhoundsaspets.org.nz/

A great way of avoiding the dogs potentially being put to sleep after they've been retired from their racing careers (or are unsuited for racing for whatever reason).
-

Generally they make hopeless pets as they are train to chase and kill pretty much. Our Neighbour had one and it had to be put down eventually. Cleaned up all the Rabbits on the farm but.... and all the domestic cats in the district..... :)
-

I do like that initiative but it takes a while to retrain. I can't see it being a solution for NSW and ACT.
-

Interesting - my brother and family have had the opposite experience. I suppose there's a bit of work done in selecting the most suitable for rehoming... in this case the cats remained the boss of the house! :)
-

Greyhounds are meant to be great pets. Obviously, lots of them can't live with cats but if you keep them under control and don't own a cat then there shouldn't be a problem.

Great too if you want them to run end grab your slippers or newspaper in 2.1 seconds -

Any industry will engage in some dodgy shit if it can get away with it. Perhaps the NSW govt should have gone in harder with root and branch reform rather than a blanket ban. I know nothing about greyhound racing, but does the sport itself fit the definition of animal cruelty. -

The sport itself? Certainly not. Greyhounds were bred to chase small things and run fast. Saying greyhound racing is cruel would be like saying it's cruel to make a border collie herd sheep.

It was more the way the greyhounds were kept at the track, the fatality numbers and the prevalence of live baiting. This is a link to the report.
-
