I hope Venus and Daniell got a nice welcome home too. Winning the first tennis medal at an Olympics for NZ since Anthony Wilding in 1912 is special

    Jul 30, 2021  /  Sport

    Bronze for Daniell and Venus

    Bronze for Daniell and Venus

Marcus Daniell and Michael Venus have won New Zealand's first ever Olympic medal in tennis with a 7-6 6-2 win over Americans Austin Krajicek and Tennys Sandgren in Tokyo.

Time to be pedantic. Anthony Wilding did not win his bronze medal in 1912 for New Zealand as we did not field a team that year. All New Zealanders that went to those games competed as part of the team called Australasia. Shades of the current Russian competitors not being part of the Russia Team by being designated stateless and consigned to represent the Russian Olympic Committee rather than the country called Russia!!!

On a more serious note ne sacrificed his life at the Battle of Aubers Ridge at Neuve Chapelle in northern France when aged just 31.

    https://nzhistory.govt.nz/page/kiwi-wimbledon-winner-killed-battle

Thanks for the clarification. So that is why media said it was NZs first ever tennis medal. He remains as our only Wimbledon champion, and one of so many to be tragically lost in the Great War as you say.

    The article said
    https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/sport/448120/bronze-for-daniell-and-venus
"Marcus Daniell and Michael Venus have won New Zealand's first ever Olympic medal in tennis with a 7-6 6-2 win over Americans Austin Krajicek and Tennys Sandgren in Tokyo... Daniell and Venus are the first New Zealanders to win an Olympic medal for tennis since Anthony Wilding won singles bronze in 1912 at the Stockholm Games competing for Australasia."

At the risk of entering a black hole of pedantry, an Australasian medal won by a New Zealander is still a New Zealand medal. It just can also be claimed as Australasian by those poaching Aussies.. and I doubt Wilding would say he was competing for Australasia but NOT New Zealand.

Trivia question: of the 12 medal winners from the two Australasian Olympic teams, how many, if any, could consider themselves Australasians anyway?

@nostrildamus Our countries were pretty young back in 1912. I'd imagine many if not all of those competitors still thought of themselves as ex-pats from somewhere else

Thank you, I disagreed, so went back to those 12 (or so) to investigate. And what backstories they had! Arguably Wilding was the least Australian or NZ-ish of the lot. At least one had family in the area going back to the 18th century, one was a Lord Mayor and tyre magnate, another Australia's first action star, I think some were very patriotic. And definite movies to be made there (including the connection between surfing, a murder mystery, and the "richest girl" of the world).

I split the thread. The conversation about what sports belong in the Olympics is here:

Lets keep this one on current events/results etc

Olywhites had an attacking chance but chose to kick it back, their negative tactics cost them a free kick in a dangerous position and a YC for Stenseness

I haven't been keeping up with the news. Is that a new variant of coronavirus?

"We're all so proud" 🥇🥈🥇 #WATCH The New Zealand’s Men’s Sevens team welcome back NZ's returning rowers, bearing their medals, with a heartfelt waiata.

Then Eric Murray watching Twigg and the Mens 8

I didn't realise it, but Bond was in the 8. Talk about genetic freak!

I’ve gone from watching an exciting game with 14 women trying to bash two shades of shit out of each other then springing up for more to watching 22 men (well maybe 11) falling over in agony if someone gets too close to them.
    And it’s fucking tedious.
