Can someone tell be why it’s now Olympic Best and World Best instead of World and Olympic Record? Have we upset someone with this??
Apologise if this has already been asked but new to this thread
I think it depends on the sport. Rowing has always been 'best' rather than record. Maybe sports that think they have more variable environments? Or maybe just a historical quirk.
For rowing it’s the variable environments. Same distances but you could be outdoors or indoors, strong current, tailwind etc, so the governing body determined that it was more accurate to use best.
-
Indoor rowing?

Given current form and results it would appear our best hopes for a swag of gold medals would be for the entire men's program to identify as women...
-
Prendergast and Gowler gold....just ..but who cares..its gold
-
was getting nervous with the fast finishing russians..but Prendergast and Gowler held their nerve
-
I thought that was a measured race by Gowler and Prendergast. NZ crews are always strong over the middle 1000 m and finish.

Watching the medal ceremony I noticed that one of the ROC rowers initially picked up the gold medal instead of their silver medal.
Proof that we can't trust those Russians!

It was worth a crack, Nigel

Emma Twigg wins her women's single sculls SF.
-
Just quietly, Twigg is the fastest qualifier, and the Irish favourite missed out in the other SF.
Lunchtime viewing tomorrow:
12:33 pm - women's single sculls
1:05 pm - women's eight
1:25 pm - men's eight -
What a 100m freestyle final.
Dressell wins it with an Olympic record whilst Aussie Kyle Chalmers only swam .06 seconds behind in trying to defend his Rio gold.
-
Its a shame the woman's sculls cant also do a 1000m, 500m, 2500m, forward, backwards as well...then we could clean up in the medals like the other countries do in swimming...

At least we have the kayaking to come, Lisa "Big guns" Carrington must be a serious contender again

They kind of have that in the kayaking.

They do, but not 6 or 7 gold medal opportunity kind.
They need to throw in some team versions, backwards, and about another 4 or 5 distances... -

Thought he had him but Dressel held on. Dressel will clean up after this.

It really would. I'd watch that. They could ditch a few of the other sports to accommodate.
-
Lewis Clareburt into the 200IM final. 7th fastest. Considering it's not his favoured event that's a great effort.
-
He put in a good final 50 m freestyle leg to get 4th in that SF.
-
The NZ swimmers who have to date set new PB's or broken a NZ record have done a fucking great job.
Thats all you can ask of them really. -
China have just set a WR to win the women's 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay ahead of the USA and Australia.

Or simply hold individual races in 500m increments up to say 3km - that'll do it!

USA and Australia both beat the previous WR with their times too. Crazy! Huge upset for Aus not to win after how dominant they were entering the final.

And they didn't look happy to finish with a bronze. Another 5 m and Ledecky would have touched first.

Ozzie playing with a yanks pole means all Australian athletics isolating

In the past I've been critical of the Olympics adding sports, or keeping sports in that may not 'belong'.
Maybe it's lockdown, maybe it's the 2020/1 vibe, but I've found that melting away this games and I'm genuinely enjoying every part of it.
Yeah surfing and skateboarding aren't traditional athletic pursuits, but I bloody loved both events. Seeing how much a gold medal meant to them was really cool. It gave them all such a rush.
I've watched pretty much every sport, and it's not all my cup of tea. But maybe that's what the Olympics of the future is going to be - a whole bunch of sports and you just pick and choose what you want and like. With more sports, there's going to be a wider audience but maybe not quite as deep.
Athletics and swimming will still be the central sports, but will I get into sport climbing? Hell yeah. Karate? Why not. BMX? Of course. I won't love it all but if there's a gold medal on the line then it at least gets my interest.

I'm pretty sure i can dig out a post from 5 years ago that says exactly the same thing but
Channel 7s prime time coverage, and Hamish McLaughlin can eat a fat dick. It's fucking prime time, i don't want to watch endless replays of Aussies from earlier in the day. I don't want interviews. I don't want to hear from the fucking families. I don't want a little social media segments. i want sports. All the sports. Last night i saw a snippet of the guy who came fucking 3rd in the Time Trial. A snippet!!! Did they show who won? Did they fuck. I did, however, watch Jess Fox fuck up her run about 18 times. And a fucking metre by metre breakdown of a swimming race.
Yes, before you say it, there is an app. But the internet at my house is positively 3rd world, and the outside TV is battling a bit. So i am stuck with the two channels. And by god do i hate Hamish.
And i can't wait for the swimming to finish so i don't have to hear from Basil fucking Zempa-whateverthefuckyournameis any more. What a bellend
-
@mariner4life I feel your pain, you're essentially living in the 90s. Just replays of Aussie wins while 95% of the action happens away from your eyes. It must suck hard.

@barbarian Spot on about Skateboarding and Surfing. Great additions to the Olympics.
Personally I don't think Tennis or Golf should be there when there are other bigger events in those sports not only this year, but this month.

Right on! How annoying they didn't include hopscotch, marbles, soapbox derby and kick scooters.

Synchronised diving as well. Ah wait, that’s already there 😜
