Great morning for GB
Silver in Men's Triathlon
Gold in swimming; diving; mtn bikingSilver or Gold on the way in Women's Taekwando
I thought Tom Daly had retired. That’s terrific that he finally won gold. Remember him as a 14 year old at the 2008 Olympics.
Another shit medal.
What’s shit about it?
Synchronised. Even more pathetic than normal subjective crap.
Not everyone’s cup of tea perhaps but pathetic seems rather harsh.
It may be harsh given they no doubt put in a tremendous amount of effort, but I'm still wedded to the Olympic motto whereas these days the Olympics appear to be trending towards the "participation medal" end of the spectrum.
Thankfully we’re still a long way from medals being awarded for participation. The best on the day wins. I get some of the criticism against judged sports but I tend to give diving some slack. I guess because they’re great athletes (not some greasy dude in a suit with a rabbit in his mit) performing insanely hard athletic feats.
I don't. They're not even gymnasts, who I don't think should be in the Olympics either.
Not even gymnasts? Who ever made that claim?
What claim, that they're not gymnasts? Clearly the person you quoted.
What does that even mean? What is the relevance? They’re not even gymnasts? Are divers try hard gymnasts? Failed gymnasts that traded in the parallel bars for a 10m platform?
I hate bobsled. They’re not even rally car drivers.

Come on, it's bullshit. Just because something is hard, doesn't mean it should be in the Olympics. As a mate said yesterday, I think magicians are fucking amazing, but I'm not giving one a gold medal.
Synchronised anything can piss off. Taking an event that exists already, then transforming it to see if your mate can match your movements is a joke. Why isnt there synchronised hurdles? Javelin? Don't get me started on "walking" (and yes, I see the parallels to swimming events). 3 x 3 basketball can bugger off too.
I think I actually prefer the skateboarding/surfing/breakdancing to that stuff.
You’re comparing someone pulling a rabbit out of a hat to a diving competition? Or hurdles or javelin to diving? I’m not a huge fan but don’t get the hate. At the end of the day I was just pleased that a really good athlete and good bloke won a gold. Relax.
I love diving. Gutsy and skilled. Yeah it has a subjective element to judging it, but I don't recall to many stories of fixing or travesties of justice - seems like the best guys win.
I equally love gymnasticts.
My hate for anything synchronised is that you've now judging (to a huge degree) on something totally different - your ability to do it at the same time and in the same way as someone else, My javelin comment is valid - why not have it, where you get points for distance, but also points for how close your mate can land his to yours? No, you say, that'd be fucking stupid? Yeah, I agree.
But it’s not really. Throwing a spear is not the same as jumping off a 10m high platform and doing a somersault and reverse pike or whatever ridiculous bodily contortions these guys do. In fact it’s an absurd comparison.
One has literally no subjective element. They simply threw the javelin further than anyone else.
So you would agree that it’s a poor comparison?

so what you're saying, is that IF there is a certain level of artistry in some skill, then its OK to take that skill and stop measuring who is best at that skill, but instead measure and reward which pair can closely replicate each others skill?
Seems sensible.
In fact, why do we stop at 2 people doing synchronised diving? Aren't there like 6 per team in the synchronised swimming? I think diving should actually be teams of 12, all diving off the platform at the same time. Far more entertaining.
Look, clearly I'm being facetious for effect. But you will never convince me that it makes sense to give out medals to people who can do pretty hard stuff looking exactly like each other. Its just really dumb
I never actually said anything about artistic merit and was quite clear that it was about the degree of difficulty. I think you’d admit that synchronised diving is insanely hard. Synchronised javelin - not so much.
I get you don’t like synchronised diving. Fair enough. I just don’t agree that its comparable with other sports due to the unique nature of diving. And certainly not farking javelin 😉.

Full time: Blacks Sticks 2 - 2 Japan.
Very close game. At times, I thought Japan was better and deserved the win, but then the Black Sticks came back and were close to taking the lead.
What does that mean for the semis qualification?

At least gymnasts have to fight gravity to do somersaults and twists.

Yes, one's an actual achievement objectively better than the competition.

luka jones qualifies in 5th for final in an hour in the kayak slalom
not bad as she made some errors.
all racing for 2nd the Aussie who qualified in 1st looks to be on a different level

I've just been watching those swimming finals. Small margins amongst the top swimmers. The Russian 100 m backstroker lost out to his compatriot by messing up his final stroke and touch.
Except for Peaty
5th fastest time ever, he holds the fastest 16 times.
Unbeaten in 7 years

It is not unheard of for an Australia craft crack up and sink when under big pressure.

By the 'subjective measurement' criteria a bunch of the combat sports would be out since they're decided based on judges scoring.
The triple jump doesn't award points for style but will just dq you if you don't follow the proper form. Likewise all the swimming events mandate a style.
The ref in sevens awards points for failing to follow the right forms (eg penalty try against South Korea for deliberate knock down).
Nothing at the olympics is easy. In fact, if the field is too small, they reduce the number of medals (eg no 3rd place medal awarded).

Swimming is the sport that feels like they get lots of medals for doing the same thing
