The Olympic Games in Japan are to be held without spectators due to rising cases of coronavirus.
Olympics Minister Tamayo Marukawa made the announcement following discussions with officials and organisers on Thursday evening.
A state of emergency in Tokyo will run throughout the Games, to combat coronavirus.
Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga told reporters it would run from 12 July and remain in place until 22 August.
Bars and restaurants will not be allowed to serve alcohol and must close by 20:00 (11:00 GMT).

There has been widespread opposition to the Games in Japan, with calls for them to be postponed or cancelled.
The vaccination effort really scaled up during July, then they ran out of vaccine and now in many places it's completely stopped.
Then they decided that we need another SOE, and the rationale for this SOE is the Olympics, which is really fucking off a lot of people - it's not the lack of spectators itself, but that fact that all entertainment is being shut down, so 'we're having the games, but no enjoying it, in fact, stay in your homes you peasants, while we spend your tax dollars on something you don't even want'.
So, the negative talk comes from two aspects - one is related to the government seemingly caring more about holding the games than Coronavirus, and the second is that they haven't really made a big enough effort to get people vaccinated, now they are going to lock everything down during the event (so that people can't go out and have a drink during the games).
That has to be so shit. It’s like hosting a massive party at your house and being locked in a cupboard. They should have either cancelled or spread the events around several countries. Would still be shit but better than the epic clusterfuuck that is unfolding.
Feel really sorry for Japan. Had everything ready in record time and now it’s just a big joke.
I'm really angry that last year they didn't just put everything back by four years (i.e., to 2024). The only issue would have been the athlete's village, but apart from that, all of the infrastructure could have been maintained and we would likely have a 'normal' games.
Maybe there are issues with the games being awarded to Paris in 2024? There are also massive amounts of money at play. At any rate, it’s so shit for Japan.
Not to mention all the athletes who'll be too old, or have already postponed important life events (female athletes postponing having children, for example) and would have to postpone them even longer if they want to participate.

Tbh I don’t think most people could give a flying f. If anything an Olympics without crowds and face masks galore will only reinforce the overall shittiness of the situation. I’d also add that access to a ridiculous selection of screen entertainment has definitely not been an issue during all of this.

@rancid-schnitzel OK well we can agree to disagree. I think it's one of the few genuinely global events, it's clearly not going to be as good this year but it still resonates across a large part of the world.

Yeah it's so obviously so about the money, I really give zero shits now. Aside from all the deaths and illness this will cause. And the MIQ places that the Olympians swanning around the world have taken from kiwis desperate to get back

I watch (some of) the Olympics because I get to see sports and countries I normally can't or won't watch. I like the Olympics for the sports, can't be bothered with all the "entertainment" surrounding it. I feel sorry for the crowds who can't attend and for the businesses that suffer, but I'll watch. I prefer the Winter Olympics though.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the Olympics and it’s one of the few sporting events I genuinely get excited about (much more so than the RWC) but it just doesn’t feel right having it now, with no crowds and constant reminders of a pandemic. The opening ceremony will probably be masks and social distancing galore. I’ll take it because I don’t want to wait another 3 years, but I really don’t think most of the world even cares.

Probably helps that you were in or around London in 2012, right? I've been reminded recently with Euros of how cool it was to be in London when sports were going right. It's a bloody fun country to be in when that happens.

Interesting article. We already know that the IOC needs the Tokyo Olympics to proceed as this is their cash cow. But they aren't taking any of the risk or accepting responsibility if something goes wrong.

Yeah definitely I am 100% biased, but feels like they pulled off a "managable" sized games without the insane level of bloat, and the legacy stuff has all gone well, no white elephants
