All Blacks v Wales Test #3
-
Ok final test of the series at a packed glasshouse in Dunedin.

What are everyone's thoughts on the side that should be named?

According to Foxy there will not be wholesale changes, Hansen's comments make it sound like they might roll with Barrett at 10 and Lima off the bench.

I expect Dixon will make his debut. -

yeah they said tweaks, Cruden to get a rest, all but enforced...so Lima or BB to start?

What else can you do in the backs? Give Seta a start, or does Moala get a shot?

my team:

Crockett, Taylor, Franks

Whitelock, PT

Dixon, Read, Cane

Smiith, BB

Crotty, ST (assuming MF isnt right)

Naholo, Dagg, Smith

Coles, Moody, Faumuina, Romano, Savea, TJP, Sopoaga, Moala
-
I think you are pretty on the money there TR.

I think Seta did well considering he had to come on so early - well up until the kick/tackle. I suspect Moala will be bench as he wasnt in initial squad and he can cover midfield/wing. -
Id like to see PT start. Really like the look of him. I did say I wanted BB to start, but since its Limas home ground might as well give him a bash.
-

Not far away TR, but I suspect less changes in the forwards. Hansen seems to be a lot more conservative than the fans.

I reckon:

Moody will continue to start; Crockett on the bench.

Retallick and Whitelock continuing and probably Tuipolotu on the bench.

Agree good to have Dixon and Taylor getting starts, but maybe Kaino on the bench instead of Tuipolotu?
-

Will be interesting to see how they play it.

You wouldn't want to change too much or you risk losing the momentum from the first two games.

You would think a few new guys might get time. I would think they might want to get Dixon and Squire on the field at least. Dmac might be less of a priority as he is so young and it could have been about getting him time in the squad instead.

They have other guys they need to give time at 10 before him and might want to keep some stability in selections at the back with Dagg also coming back and Naholo being fairly fresh in what has been Savea's spot for they last few years.

Same with Moala and Franklin as they were just cover for other guys. Although maybe Moala comes onto the bench if Fekitoa isn't right.

I would expect LIma to get a shot either starting or off the bench. Especially now that Cruden had his knock. Might depend on Barretts flu who starts.

I wouldn't mess with the tight 5 too much. Good to keep that consistent if you are going to bring new loosies in. Maybe Taylor to the bench.
-

If Ngatai is fit, like to see him at 12 paired with Crotty - otherwise would go with a Moala/Crotty centre pairing - with Moala at 12.

Also like to see Dixon and PT start, Squire and Retallick on the bench.

Looks like BB will get the nod at 10, that brings Lima onto the bench.
-
Crotty's best position IMO is 13. Therefore NgÄtai/Crotty, probably then Crotty/Seta or else Moala/Crotty. But not Crotty/Fekitoa it just doesn't work. Aki/Crotty would have been handy.

Heading forward SBW/Ioane maybe. -

:mocking: You throwing the Irish a bone ...?
-

We don't need to poach Irish players surely.

-

All the Crusaders players to be in the 23, eh ACTC!! :)

I think Dixon will be the only newbie to start and it sounds like Barrett at 10 ahead of Sopoaga. TKB on the bench, and Taylor replaces Harris.
-
Id like to see;

Moody
Taylor
Franks
Whitelock
Tuipolutu
Kaino
Cane
Read
Smith
Sopoaga
Naholo
Ngatai
Tamanuvalu (sorry sp)
Smith
Dagg

Coles
Crockett
Faumauina
Dixon
Squire
TKB
BB
Moala

To be fair, its bloody hard guessing who the selectors plan to rest and how/when they integrate the new players. A lot harder than trying to pick what their top team is that's for sure. -

I'd like Sopoaga to start

-
From a Welsh perspective, I think we improved a little yesterday & I'd expect a little more next week.
Personally I think they could do with taking a couple of risks squad wise. I'd seriously consider leaving Roberts out or at least removing him after 45/50 minutes. The guy looked in bits after 50 mins yesterday, was out on his feet. Scott Williams was poor against Waikato but offers far more offensively, especially when the game opens up.
Also they have to put Matthew Morgan on the bench & give him 30mins. We've got nothing to lose at this point. If he gets mashed on defence a couple of times who cares, let's see if he can create something.
Series has gone let's try to evolve our game & play more positive rugby. -

Crotty defo isn't a 12.

He's not a "visionary" or a creator. He's a safe pair of hands, who may grow into the organisational role at 13.

Need a better read on the game at 12, a facilitator who can conjure something from nothing. I'd be interested to see what Ngatai and Moala can bring to the role.

For the future, Rieko looks a good prospect and also interested in the development of Laumape.
-

Team I'd pick

Moody, Coles, Franks, Whitelock, Retallick, Dixon, Cane, Read, A Smith, Sopoaga, Naholo, Crotty, Tamanuvalu, Ben Smith, Dagg

Bench: Crocckett, Taylor, Fauminia, Tuipolutu, A Savea, TJP, Beauden Barrett, Moala
-

I tend to agree with this, nothing against Crotty as a footballer , he may well be our 13, but dont see him as our long term solution at 12
-

+ 1,000,000
-
Another dead rubber test, I was much happier when we had two tests and a third against someone else.Thenwe could have looked forward to England or Ireland coming. The whole 3 test thing seemed like a copout, extra insurance in case one of the SH teams lose a test.

I know Barrett is incredibly quick but he ran Roberts down with ease. I reckon that and the missed tackles may have been down to him playing on when he shouldn't have. He did the same early in his career after a collision with Stirling Mortlock. One would think a doctor should be a bit smarter about such things.
-

I don't consider it a dead rubber. We still have a proud 60 year record to protect against Wales.
-
Almost exactly what I'd pick - I'd be tempted to give J Savea a run (for Naholo), put Squire on the bench (for Ardie), and the midfield/bench would depend on Fekitoa's fitness.

I think they'll pick Sparky's team switching Barrett for Sopoaga, with midfield depending on fitness. You'd think they would want to give Squire time, but maybe not this test. -

Any idea why the IRB have decided to bring the three test series back ? they're as rare as an Owen Franks clean break.
-

Thats exactly my point, two tests is enough, a tied series would still have ended up being a victory for Wales anyway, would be far more interested in a one off test against one of the other nations. That we dont want to lose to Wales is the same as every test match. Out of the last 8 or so 3 test series in the southern hemisphere I think the only non-Lions series going to a decider is Ireland/SA and even that is just giving SA a chance to save face.
-

I just don't understand your train of thought. 3 tests series are the best. I love it that there is a third test. If it was 1 each I would be bitterly disappointed that there was no third test

-
I know there is talk of starting Barrett and moving him out to 14/15 later in the game.

I just think his effectiveness at a weapon will be reduced if he's got some miles on the clock instead of hitting the field fresh.

Can't see a way of getting Squire in. Would require leaving Ardie or Pat T off the bench reducing it's effectiveness.

I don't think the margins are that big that we can take Wales at all lightly. -

Wales finished the last test full of running. They are not a broken side by any stretch of the imagination, and i would imagine the selectors will be putting another full strength side out.

-

Have the coaches said anything about Harris being selected ahead of Taylor for the first 2 tests?

Because unless they have, I think everyone's assumption that Taylor is ahead in the pecking order is a bit premature.
-

bro, if we don't have assumptions that we know shit, we have nothing!

I don't know if I follow that line of thinking, he gets to push his case during Super rugby like Five Sopoaga did. If he shows his wares there and convinces the coaches he's the man for the starting 10 role then he'll get some starts.
-

Really?

Firstly do the AB selectors "owe" anyone?
Secondly to get a similar impact off the bench they would need to put DMac at 23. -

If that was the case I'm not sure Kaino would have started over Dixon, Cane over Ardie, and Lima would have started by now. From what I've seen, once you've been in the environment for a while they reward All Blacks form over Super Rugby form.

Yeah, what must be dozens of tests off the bench, many campaigns waiting for an opportunity and game changing impact in important games, would justify an opportunity to start for Barrett, in my opinion.
-
